The paradigm above illustrated how the researchers conceptualized the study for better

understanding of the topic. The input variable shows mainly the perception of the people in

Brgy. Bocohan regarding the installation of transgender public restrooms. The answers of the

respondents were analyzed to provide an output of whether or not it is good to create another

division of restroom for the LGBTQ community

Conceptual Framework

The main reason of this study was to know whether it is good or it is bad of the

impact of Installation of Transgender Public Restrooms. This conceptual framework presents the

impact of third-gender public restrooms to their emotional, social and physical. The researchers

composed five (5) questionnaires to answer the following questions.

Definition of Terms

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies derived from related books,

journals, and other references such as the internet which are all necessary in framing the concept

of the study. This chapter also provides the research paradigm and conceptual framework of the

study.

Related Study

Definition of Public Restroom

According to a study of Remo (2018), room with toilets in a public place can be referred to

as a restroom, a comfort station, or a washroom. According to BC Laws in Public Toilet Acts,

toilet means a device used for individual disposal of human waste, excrement, and includes a

School in Inter Global College Foundation Incorporated
Lucena City
lavatory, water closet and urinal. In this act, a public place can be accessed by the public whether

or not an admission fee or charge is required to be paid to obtain access.

Female and Male Toilet Separation

According to a study of Pearl (2017), female trying to live as male, in her answer at

Quora, Public Toilets first appeared in the 19th century in which social attitudes were given

importance in such a way that respectable women could not show their legs in public when they

actually peed or defecated and also the issue of menstruation is absolutely banned.

By the late 19th century, the factory “water closet” or restrooms became a flashpoint of

cultural anxieties. There were deadly cholera epidemics, rapid development of increasingly

dangerous machinery in factories was viewed as special threat to “weaker” female workers, and

Victorian values that stresses the importance of privacy and modesty were subjected to special

challenge in factories, where women work side by side with men, often sharing the single-user

restrooms. It was the confluence of these anxieties that led legislators in Massachusetts and other

states to enact the first laws requiring that factory restrooms be sex-separated.

Third-Gender Public Restrooms Issues

According to Lee (2018) in his study in North Carolina enacted a law requiring that

people be allowed to use the public restrooms with third-gender that corresponds to the sex.

Meanwhile, the White House has taken an opposing position directing that transgender students

6
The Impact of Research Making to the Selected Senior High
School in Inter Global College Foundation Incorporated
Lucena City
be allowed to use the bathroom that matches their gender identity. Others said that the solution to

this is to convert all public restrooms to unisex use or having a third-gender public restrooms.

Opponents of LGBTQ rights have employed the slogan “No Men in Women’s

Bathrooms”, which evokes visions of weak women being subject to attack by men if transgender

women are allowed to invade the public bathroom. In fact, the only solid evidence of any such

attacks in public restrooms are those directed at transgendered individuals, a significant

percentage of whom report verbal and physical assault in such spaces.

Gender Equality

The importance of the gender equality is having the right and possibility to have control

over their body, reproduction decisions, and sexuality, and the need for gender equality in order

to achieve these goals are recognized as crucial by the Fourth World Conference on Gender

Equality. It is important to understand how these emotional responses may result in behavioural

actions, such as working to create equality or other reparatory measure.

Emotional Impact of Gender Inequality

Gender inequality continues to exist in a variety of forms throughout the world based on

Peterson and Runyan (2014). Wood and Eagly (2014), noted that gender inequality is usually

exhibited in the form of patriarchy, or a social structure in which men are entitled to more assets,

7
The Impact of Research Making to the Selected Senior High
School in Inter Global College Foundation Incorporated

power and privilege than women. Not only are women and men are deprived of both financial

and leadership opportunities but also the third gender sexuality.

Researchers have found that individuals confronted with group-based inequality

experience emotional distress in several forms, the most frequently studied including collective

guilt and moral outrage.

Reaction to Social Inequality

Two possible reactions to perception of gender inequality include collective guilt and

moral outrage. Collective guilt refers to negative feelings of distress experienced by members of

privilege group when they become aware that members of their in-group have imposed harm and

wrong doing on members of disadvantage group. An in-group refers to a particular social group

with which an individual feels shared connection, membership or devotion.

Related Literature

According to Bovens and Marcocci (2018), some people may feel uncomfortable in

gender- neutral toilets. There are many reasons for this. But long waiting times are also seriously

uncomfortable.

According to Alba (2018), at times equity is necessary to achieve gender equality, but

there are many instances where this is not the case, on this day, many people especially LGBTQ

members has experienced bullying due to their gender.

8
The Impact of Research Making to the Selected Senior High
School in Inter Global College Foundation Incorporated
Lucena City
According to Beattie (2017), arguing over which bathroom a person should use gets

incredibly complicated. Not using the toilet is not an option for any of us. Third-gender

bathroom allow all of us, no matter who we are to do it in peace.

According to Lin (2018), many third gender nonconforming people have limited access to

bathrooms due to the harassment, violence, and threat of arrest they experience in both women’s

and men’s bathrooms.

According to Rivera (2018), making gender neutral bathrooms more widely available

beyond single stalls ought to be the ultimate goal because being able to use bathrooms without

the threat of violence or harassment is a human right, not a privilege.

According to Claudio (2017), “There are three key approaches for effective

conversations regarding third-gender people, including starting with an acknowledgement that

many people aren’t quite there yet. Second, we can emphasize the importance of safety in

restrooms-for everyone-and help people calm their own concerns around safety in restrooms by

reinforcing the fact that laws are already in place to keep people safe. And finally, we can help

the conflicted middle understand how LGBTQ people are hurt when they are denied legal

protections from discriminations.

According to Remo (2014), gender equality continues to be a popular issue in the world,

and while Philippines remained to be a top performer in the Asia-Pacific in terms of gender

equality regarding the gap between men and women.

According to Corcione (2018), gender neutral restrooms are also necessary alternatives

toward single gender bathrooms for transgender folks who don’t feel comfortable or safe using

public restrooms for fear of harassment from other bathroom-goers.

The descriptive method of research was utilized in the study to describe the perspectives

of the residents of Brgy. Bocohan to the installation of transgender public restroom. It aimed to

define systematically and objectively how the residents perceive the topic of the study.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study were the residents of Brgy. Bocohan Lucena City. The

researchers used the descriptive method to reach the desired number of respondents to answer the

questionnaires. It was composed of both male and female whether single or married at the age of

18 years old and above.

Research Locale

The study was conducted in Brgy, Bocohan Lucena City, Quezon Province since the

chosen respondents are the residents of the barangay. The researchers chose this because they

know that Brgy. Bocohan Lucena City is one of the barangay in Lucena City that there are so

many LGBTQ members experienced inequality when it comes to transgender public restroom.

Research Instrument

The researchers utilized unstructured questionnaire as a main tool for gathering

necessary data from the selected respondents. The questionnaire is divided into two parts. The

first part contains the personal information about the respondents. The second part of the

questionnaire is composed of open-ended questions to gained broader insights about the

respondents’ perspective of the problem of the study.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers used essay form type of questionnaire to determine the impact of

transgender public restrooms as perceived by the residents of Brgy. Bocohan Lucena City. The

researchers requested permission to the Brgy Captain of Lucena City by means of an authorized

letter signed by the researchers’ adviser and principal to conduct this study. The researchers gave

their respondents time to answer the questionnaire. After the administration of the questionnaires

the researchers tabulated, analyzed and interpreted the data gathered.

Data Analysis

The data was analyzed using codes and categorization of the answers given by the

respondents. These codes and category was then interpreted using high cognitive level to define

what are the most important and highly answered as perceived by the respondents.

They don’t need to hide who they truly are, they are respected and well treated in the community

but behind those positive effect is a negative effect for their social aspect of life, much more they

are vulnerable to discrimination and judgement because they are separated on what the people

that the other gender cannot be shy with the other ones, because they can show or they can be

the LGBTQ family in a way that they will feel that they are not belong. It means sense of

Table2.3 presented the impact of transgender public restroom in emotional aspect of

life. According to respondent 1 the impact of third-gender public restroom in our emotional life

is the third-gender can show their true self they can do whatever they want and they will keep

their chin up by not being judge by the people. According to respondent 2 the transgender public

restroom will affect the emotions the LGBTQ family in a way that they will feel that they are not

belong. It means sense of belongingness will be the problem in the field of emotion. According

to respondent 3 it gives emotional stability and promotes equity as they are recognized as part of

19

the community. Little things such as being recognized gives high boost of confidence for those

who belong to the third-gender. Respondent 4 In terms of emotional aspect, many people cannot

understand the situation they are feeling. Now that the third gender restroom are tackled, people

with different genders will be free from awkwardness as they will have own gender restroom.

And the last respondent number 5, it was a great impact in emotional aspect because third-gender

has a freedom even if in public restroom.

According to Aguilar (2018), the people must be wondering why third gender

restrooms are so important to the LGBTQ members. Well, when a person is non-binary person

like the transgender, walking to a male or female bathroom juts does not feel right. Every time

that the trans people or the LGBTQ members use the restroom, they inadvertently forced to

misidentify themselves. They risk harassment and often violence by using specifically gendered

bathrooms. So, third-gender restrooms do not just help trans people like me, who don’t feel any

ties to being male or female, they help all of us a various points in our journey. In an ideal world,

people would just let everyone pee in a male or female bathroom if that’s what makes most sense

for them, but unfortunately we do not live in that world.

Table 3 presented the relevance of transgender public restroom to the community.

According to respondent 1, the relevance of the third-gender public restroom in our community

is giving the third-gender freedom to have do what they want and giving them their will to enjoy

their life. Also if we are given the chance to have it we can avoid fight about gender because it is

not right to underestimate or judge by others. We all have flaws and we need to live with it.

According to respondent 2, the community will view the third-gender as different to the others

21

because of the sense of separation even in restroom. Meaning the community will have a

negative view to them. According to respondent 3, both the community and those who belong to

the third-gender gains something from this. A we all know not all people are that open when it

comes to things like that. And people who belong to the third-gender don’t feel at ease when

using bathroom that doesn’t match their true identity. They don’t get harassed or something.

According to respondent 4, Members of LGBTQ community will be from awkwardness. They

will not be shy to enter to where they will enter. And the last respondent 5, there’s an equality to

the community.

According to Rodil (2018), sexual orientation is not prepared, but is a complex

combination of biological and environmental reasons. Although there is still a belief that

homosexual acts are “unnatural” or “dispersive”, research shows that homosexuality is an

example of the normal and natural nature of human sexuality and not one effect of negative

thinking. Judgment and discrimination against homosexual and bisexual people however, exhibit

a major catalyst, and are more destructive to homosexual and bisexual children.

OUTPUT

The Impact of Research Making to the Selected Senior High
School in Inter Global College Foundation Incorporated
Lucena City

This output represent the third-gender public restroom. In order to prevent

discriminatory acts against transgendered people, it would be proactive for the responsibility of

providing a third gender option in the design of public restrooms. Due to the harassment, assault,

or even arrest that occur as a result of the third-gender persons using restrooms that do not

correspond to their gender identity or their birth sex, many in the LGBTQ community are calling

for the provision of third gender option restroom in the public place.

Once the people see our research output, they can see a sign that represent the LGBTQ

community. They can see a toilet for those lesbian or transgender people, also a toilet for gays.

This restroom will be located at Barangay Hall of the Brgy. Bocohan Lucena City, for the third-

gender.
