“MORPHOLOGY”

1. Morphology is the subfield of linguistics that studies the internal structure of words and
the relationship among words. There are two terms in this definition that need to be
discussed: words and relationship among words.

Morphemes are the smallest meaning-bearing units of the language. As such, they are the
fundamental building blocks for communication during both language and reading development.
However, the role that morphology plays in language processing is yet to be clarified. In
children, morphological variables such as morpheme frequency and morphological awareness
have been associated with word reading and spelling, reading comprehension and vocabulary
size. It also present the results on the role of morphology of different studies conducted in four
different languages (English, French, Italian and Spanish) and through a variety of experimental
designs and tasks. The role of morphology will be interpreted and discussed in the light of
current theories. Taken together, these studies show that morphology plays an important part in
children’s language and reading development. In summary, morphology is the scientific study of
the shapes and forms of the words and the study of the internal structure of words and the
process of word formation. The subject and the topic of morphology facilitates in several ways to
master the language including spelling, vocabulary, fluency, word recognition, pronunciation,
structure of complex words, text comprehension, the origin of words as “English is a
particularly fascinating language to study, because its history of borrowing from other languages
has left it with an enormous collection of morphemes, not all of which still have meanings that
are recognizable without recourse to a dictionary and so on. Thus the language seems natural
and spontaneous.
2. The study was related to the study of English through the factors they both possess. Like
the words, how you will use the words and the relationship of words in forming sentences.
Eventually, morphological awareness can help language students to familiarize with lexical
derivations and with the meaning or morphemes. They will be able to distinguish, for instance,
that the suffixes “-ment” or “-ness” form a noun, or that the suffix “-ly” forms an adverb.
Ultimately, the will be able to realize that, at some extent, the English language has a certain
morphological logic people follow to know and produce new words. These new words, reminds
us of what we could call, in Chomsky’s words, the transformational-generative morphology, on
the ability that we humans would have to perfectly produce and understand words we’ve never
hear before if we already understand the roots. Another utility of morphology is that it helps us to
have better writing skills. Being aware that there are certain morphological irregularities in
English language is important to speak the language properly, and, in addition, it may even have
a beneficial effect in auditory skills insofar as the phonological aspect is related with morphology
in spoken language. Another aspect is that the study of morphology helps us see the relation that
English has with other languages. When we talk about the roots, for example, we can notice that
some words have their origin in Latin, German and French language and understand how this
affected the pragmatic aspects of words, in regard to their degree of formality and informality.

Some argued about the concept that we had discussed, some people have their different
interpretation about the role of morphology in language acquisition.
3. Morphology is the study of word formation. As its name suggests the study of
morphology deals important insight of how language works, exposing the different needs of
words’ categories and modifying words in various ways. Morphology applied in education will
help the teachers’ particularly English teachers to understand the nature of the language system.
This is because studying morphology means studying the system of the language works. Unlike
Phonology whose main focus simply on the element of the sound, Morphology deals solely with
how the words are formed and structured. Discussing about how the words are formed and
structured lead to the morpheme of language. Morpheme is the smallest unit of language that
carries the information about meaning or function. To conclude, one of the advantages in
learning morphology is to understand the nature of words such as how the word is formed and
structured. Therefore, learning morphology itself will help students to be more creative in
creating new words, for they have learned how to form the words. There are also questions
running in my mind from the study that sparks my curiosity and these are; as new technology
emerges, does it have a possibility that morphology will change? Is it possible to have the syntax
right, but the morphology is wrong? As new technology emerges, is there a possibility that
morphology will change?
