DIMMs replacement

CAUTION: Only replace memory in a controller node with memory that matches the failed memory exactly.
Installing controller nodes with mismatched memory configurations may cause the controller nodes to
function improperly or fail.

NOTE: If the failed node is already offline, it is not necessary to shut down the node because it is no longer
part of the cluster.

CAUTION: Observe all precautions when removing and replacing components.

Before you begin: Connect to the service processor and start an SPMAINT session.

1. From the 3PAR Service Processor Menu, select option 7 Interactive CLI for a StoreServ, then choose
the system.
2. When prompted, enter “y” to enable maintenance mode for the system.
3. Enter checkhealth -detail to verify the current state of the system.
4. Enter shownode to verify the current state of the controller nodes.
5. Enter shownode –mem to verify the current state of the controller node memory.
6. Confirm all of the cables to the node and PCI adapters are clearly labeled with their location for later
reconnection.
7. Enter shutdownnode halt followed by <nodeID> to halt the appropriate node.
8. When prompted, enter “yes” to confirm halting of the node.

NOTE: Allow up to ten minutes for the node to halt. When the node is fully halted, the node status LED
rapidly blinks green and the node service LED displays blue indicating the node is Safe To Remove.

9. Set the node power switch to the OFF position to turn off power to the node.
10. Remove the cables connected directly to the controller node and to the PCI adapters.

CAUTION: The controller node is 28 inches long and approximately 20 lbs / 9 kg. Make sure you have
enough space to remove the controller node.

11. Remove the controller node by pressing the release button to eject the handles, extending the handles
fully to disengage the node from the mid-plane, and then pulling the node out of the enclosure.
12. While carefully supporting the controller node from underneath, place the node on an ESD safe work
surface.
13. Open the cover by pulling the latch to disengage the cover and lifting to fully remove the cover from
the node.

NOTE: Each controller node contains two banks of Control Cache DIMMs and four banks of Data
Cache DIMMs. Refer to the label on the inside of the node cover, or the labels on the controller node
board itself, to help locate the failed DIMM.

14. Open both latches on either side of the DIMM slot and lift out the failed DIMM.
15. Align the notch on the replacement DIMM with the key in the DIMM slot.
16. Press the DIMM down evenly into the slot latches.
17. Confirm that both latches are fully engaged and the DIMM is securely in its slot.
18. Align and close the latch to slide the cover into place over the controller node.
19. While supporting the controller node from underneath, align and begin to slide the controller node into
the enclosure.
20. Extend both handles fully and continue to slide the controller node into the enclosure until the handles
begin to engage.
21. Close the handles to fully seat the controller node into the mid-plane.
22. Connect all of the cables that were removed earlier to the same location as labeled.
23. Set the node power switch to the ON position to apply power to the node.

NOTE: When power is supplied to the node, it begins to reboot. This process may take approximately
ten to fifteen minutes. The node becomes part of the cluster when the process is complete.

24. Verify the node status LED is blinking green in sync with other node LEDs. The uniform blinking
indicates the node has joined the cluster.
25. Enter shownode to verify the node has joined the cluster.
26. Enter shownode –mem to verify the replaced DIMM has been successfully installed.
27. Enter checkhealth -detail to verify the current state of the system.
28. Enter exit and press Enter to continue to the main menu. Select X to exit from the 3PAR Service
Processor Menu and to log out of the session.
