- Have you heard of the common saying,
"you are what you eat." Have you ever
wondered what it really means? It simply
means that if you eat nutritious foods,
you become nutritionally fit and healthy.
One of the many reasons why people
get less and less of the essential
nutrients that the body needs is

because they lack the necessary
information that will help them plan
a well balance diet. Children like you
should get much information. So the next
time you pack a lunch, make sure it is
laden with the much desired nutrients.

nutritious food? - To become physically fit.
- To prevent us from sickness.
- To boost our immune system.

- How can we achieve a healthy lifestyle? - By eating nutritious foods.

- In order for us to get the essential


nutrients needed by our body, we
need to know first the nutrients
needed by our body, the sources
of these nutrients, and the functions
of these nutrients to our body.

- Energy Giving Foods
- Body Regulating Foods
- Body Building Foods

- What is an energy giving food? - This group is also known as "Go Foods." It
gives heat to the body and enough supply of
energy that enables us to perform our work,
study your lessons and other activities.

- What are the nutrients that we


can get from eating Energy Giving
Foods or Go Foods? - Carbohydrates and Fats

- What is a carbohydrate? - Carbohydrates produces heat and gives


warmth to the body. Starchy foods are the
group of foods rich in carbohydrates.

- What is fat? - Fat is a food nutrient that supplies fuel

Foods" because they make our body
beautiful and healthy. They supply the body
with required vitamins in small amounts
necessary for the body to function effectively.

can get by eating Body Regulating
Foods? - Vitamins and Minerals

- What is a vitamin? - It helps regulate body temperature, carries


nutrients to the different parts of the body
and carries away materials from the organs of
the body.

- What is a mineral? - It builds and regulates body processes. Some

of them are calcium, iron and zinc.

vitamins and minerals? - Fruit

and iron absorption
- Vitamin D = Good for strong and healthy
bones
- Vitamin. E = Improves blood circulation and
a good protection from free radicals

- Folic Acid = Good for cell renewal.

- Calcium = Healthy teeth and bones
- Iron = Builds muscle naturally
- Zinc = Immunity and growth
- Chromium = Good for glucose that is used
for energy.

fruits and three or more servings of
vegetables each day.

- What is a Body Building Food? - This group is also known as "Grow Foods,"
because they make your body grow tall and
healthy. They help build and repair body
tissues, help keep the blood red and nerves
healthy and make the nails and teeth hard
and strong.

- What is a protein? - Builds and repairs body tissues.

- INSTRUCTIONS: In five minutes, select the appropriate nutrient/s and foods that belong to
the selected Food Group of your group, and make a short statement regarding the
importance of the given food group to our body.

10. Generalization
- "The Three Basic Food Groups" are Energy Giving Foods (Go foods), Body Regulating Foods
(Glow foods), Body Building Foods (Grow foods). Energy Giving Foods are the best sources
of Carbohydrates and Fats that gives heat to the body and enough supply of energy that
enables us to do our daily work. Body Regulating Foods are best sources of vitamins and
minerals that are necessary for the body to function effectively. Body Building Food is the
best source of Protein that helps build and repair body tissues, help keep the blood red and
nerves healthy and makes the nails and teeth hard and strong.
