Ask the class about the previous lesson.
c. Motivation:
Instruct the learners to form a small group of eight and to read “Arachne” a myth
from Ancient Greece as translated by Olivia Coolidge.
Remind them to work on their assigned task and to share their ideas,
thoughts and experiences with the class.

2. Indignant – feeling/expressing strong displeasure at something considered
unjust and insulting

5. Gorgeous – beautiful
6. Skeins – a length of thread or yarn wound in a loose long coil
ii. Analysis
Tone refers to the attitude of the writer towards his subject.
Mood is the feeling created in the reader by a literary work.
Arachne was a very talented spinner and weaver but also arrogant, so arrogant
she challenged the goddess Athene to a contest. Read the story to find out what happened when
the goddess accepted the challenge.

2. What does Arachne do that makes it difficult for her to solve the problem?
3. What happens to her as she lives through her experience?

5. What are some details in the story that will prove that Arachne’s pride is the
reason for her downfall?

Critical thinking. Answer and discuss the following questions about the
story “Arachne”.
1. What does Arachne value more than anything else?
2. Why does Arachne refuse to accept the advice of the old woman?
3. What design does Athene weave?

Group Work. Group the students into five. Determine and explain the tone
and mood presented in the text.

1. What caused Arachne’s fears and failures?
2. How did Arachne try to fight her fear and carry out the conditions of the
challenge?
3. How does she feel about her weaving skill?
4. What prevailing mood is conveyed in Arachne?
5. What is your opinion of the characteristics of the following based on their
words and actions, especially in dealing with challenges?
