Dear teachers,

This big book, “An Tuko ha Kahon” is a listening story which is in Quarter 2, Week 1 of the Teacher’s
Guide in Mother Tongue for Grade 1. However, it can also be used as you employ Shared Reading technique
in presenting your lesson which will pave a way for the development of learning competencies specifically
on the domains of Book and Print Knowledge (MT1BPK-Ia-c-1.1; MT1BPK Id-f-2.1), Phonics and Word Rec-
ognition (MT1PWR-Ic-i-5.1; MT1PWR1b-i-1.2), Oral language (MT1OL-Ie-i.5.1), Vocabulary Development (MT-
1VCD-Ia-i-1.1), Listening Comprehension (MT1LC-Ie-f-3.1) and Attitude Towards Reading (MT1ATR-Ia-i-2.1).
As a teacher, the development of the love for reading among your pupils will always be on your hands.

The Gecko in the Box

1. “Tuko! Tuko!” Mother was surprised with the sound of a gecko.


2. Mother looked for the gecko.
3. Mother looked for the gecko in the kitchen.
4. Mother looked for the gecko in the living room.
5. Mother looked for the gecko in the bedroom.
6. “Tuko! Tuko!” sounded the gecko. The gecko was in a big box in the
bedroom.
7. When Karyo came home, he saw a box in the bedroom.
8. “Tuko! Tuko!” sounded the gecko. Karyo was surprised with the sound of
the gecko.
9. He saw the gecko in the box.
10. Karyo took the gecko out from the box.
11. “Ouch!” shouted Karyo.
12. “Mother, the gecko in the box bit me,” Karyo said.
13. “Next time, do not get anything not given to you, Karyo,” mother said.
14. The gecko was no longer in the box.
