Sub Day Expectations 


You can work with your group to complete today’s activities, but you need to remain at a 
voice level 1​ so that your peers can still focus on the assignments. 
 
Assignments are due by the end of the period. 
 
Use this ​Google Timer​ to time yourself for each section.​ ​Make sure to turn the sound off. 

Part 1 - Video​ ​(20 min) 


1. Follow ​this link​ to watch more of the Frontline video, “Hunting the Nightmare 
Bacteria.” (Just in case, here is the full URL for the video: 
https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/hunting-the-nightmare-bacteria/​) 
2. Start​ at​ 21:57 (​the third section titled “Outbreak”). ​Stop​ at ​33:23​. 
3. Watch the video, then fill out the assignment on Google Classroom with questions  

 
Part 2 - Reading​ ​(20 min) 
1. Go to newsela.com. 
2. Find the article assigned to you titled “Climate change beating up oceans.” 
3. Read and annotate the article according to these instructions: 
a. Green for unknown words  
b. Yellow for interesting points 
c. Blue for key ideas 
d. Pink for anything confusing 
4. Make sure to also add comments in your annotations.  
5. When you are done, complete the quiz and writing prompt. 
 

Part 3 - Khan Academy​ ​(40 min) 


1. Go to ​khanacademy.org​.

2. Watch the video assigned to you titled “Introduction to evolution and natural 
selection.” ​(20 min) 
a. On the right side of your notebook, write the title “Evolution Khan Video 
Notes.” 
b. Below this title, summarize how each of the scenarios described in the video 
were an example of natural selection by first writing the scenario in blue ink 
and the summary in black ink.​ (10 min) 
c. The scenarios are as follows: 
i. Peppered moths​: summary 
ii. Flu virus​: summary 
iii. Bacteria and antibiotics​: summary 
3. Read the article assigned to you titled “Evolution and natural selection review.” ​(5 
min) 
4. Complete the practice assigned to you titled “Practice: Evolution and natural 
selection.” If you do not receive the score you want, retake it until you do.​ (5 min) 
 

Part 4 - Article or Homework 9​ (​ 10 min) 


1. If you are bringing a late slip for Homework 9, use this time to make sure you 
completed the assignment. 
2. If you are done with this, go to newsela.com again. Read the article assigned to you 
titled “It’s the blob!” and complete the writing assignment. 
 

Part 5 - Read ​ ​(15 min) 


1. If you finish everything, you can read for class or work other assignments you have 
or you can watch more of the Frontline video from Part 1.
