NDRRMC Confers the 20th Gawad KALASAG National Awards

04 December 2018- On Gawad KALASAG’s 20th year, the National Disaster

Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) conferred awards to Local
Government Units, Civil Society Organizations, schools, volunteers, groups, and
individuals who exemplified excellence in disaster risk reduction and management and
humanitarian assistance. The GK National Awarding Ceremony was held on 04
December 2018 at AFP Theater, Camp Gen Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

NDRRMC Chairperson and National Defense Secretary Delfin N Lorenzana

attended the awarding ceremony as the guest of honor and speaker. He also led the
conferment of awards together with NDRRMC Executive Director and OCD
Administrator Usec Ricardo B Jalad, and Department of Interior and Local Government
Assistant Secretary Manuel B Felix.

Out of the 177 entries submitted to the GK National Selection Committee (NSC),
this year, 67 were awarded in 6 different categories namely: Best Local DRRMC, Heroic
Act, School, Hospital, Civil Society, Volunteer and People’s Organizations, and Special
Recognition.

These entries were evaluated and validated by the NSC through series of
meetings and field visits. The members of the NSC are coming from the member
agencies of the NDRRMC.

Gawad KALASAG celebrates its 20th year since its inception n 1998. Dr
Capistrano, former Civil Defense Administrator said “Local preparedness, holistic
response and volunteerism are among the outcomes of the development of Gawad
Kalasag. More than an institutional legacy, it has become a platform to save lives and to
educate and train others”.

Gawad KALASAG remains the country’s premier annual awards for excellent
contributions in DRRM and humanitarian assistance. Through this, the NDRRMC
recognizes programs, activities and projects that protect high risk communities against
hazards and provide more capabilities in addressing vulnerabilities and coping from
disasters.

In his speech, Secretary Lorenzana said, “No trophy or award will match the
services you rendered to the Filipino people. But the best reward is knowing that our
people are safe and sound through our efforts. Indeed, the best outcome of our efforts
should not just be recognized today but to continue tomorrow. Let us continue to inspire
each other by the good deeds that we do and learn from the best practices”.
