Art and Craft Fair

Who we are: ‘Dive, Trek & Camp’ is a Dili based tour operator that started in 2014. They offer a
range of unique tour packages to exhibit Timor-Leste’s cultural heritage and natural beauty. It is a
fast growing company that partners with Aquatic Dive Resorts, Adrenalin Timor, Novo Tourismo
Hotel, Beloi Beach Hotel and Atauro Dive Resort for their regular packages. They are also designing
novel tour packages for adventure tourist with ‘Urban Adventures’ that is a subsidiary of award
winning international tour operator ‘Intrepid Travel’. As of September 2016, they also launched ‘Dili
Central Backpacker’s Hostel’ targeting the growing traffic of backpacking tourists in Timor.

Cruise-ships in Dili: Nevertheless, DTC’s most iconic and substantial contribution to Timor Leste
tourism has been bringing ‘Cruise-ship Tourism’ to the country. After the successful trial with P&O
Carnival in 2015, DTC has secured agreements with 4 cruise ship companies – Nobel Caledonian Line,
P&O Carnival Line, Coral Expeditions and Paul Gaulguin Expedition Cruises to operate as their
‘Shorex Tour Operator’ for Dili as the newest ‘Shorex product’. Since the signing, one cruise ship
from P&O Carnival Line, carrying 1800 passengers has already visited Dili on 4th September 2016.
1500 passengers came off the ship and explored Dili for 8 hours, visiting the historical attractions,
buying crafts, enjoying the beach – it was a success! 3 more P&O ships are scheduled to visit in 2017-
12th February, 8th March and 4th September, each bringing a minimum of 1500 new tourists to Dili. In
terms of profile of the tourists, vast majority of them will be Australian nationals within the age
group of 40 to 70 years.

Dili, Art and Craft & Music Festival:

• Why - We learnt in the last visits that tourists want an authentic Timorese experience. But
considering the limited time, majority do not want it to be too hectic or involve too much
travelling around an unfamiliar city. Therefore, bringing the vendors in one place and creating an
ambience that everyone can enjoy is the most ideal way of introducing them to Timorese
culture. At the same time, this will create opportunities for local businesses to not only sell their
products but also learn from the exposure.
• What & How - As a central attraction, DTC in partnership with industry stakeholders will
organize an ‘Art , Craft & Music Festival’ on the days of these 3 large ship visits. Different
producer groups from will display a wide variety of crafts from across the country, giving the
tourists an insight into the creative genes of Timor-Leste. There will be food stalls that will
introduce the visitors to the Timorese food. There will be drinks bar to cool down in the summer
heat and of course there will be coconut vendors for true island flavour. There will also be a
number of music and dance performances through out the day on the main stage by Timorese
artists to give the festival the complete flavour of Timorese artistry. In total, there will be at least
50 vendors displaying a range of products. There will also be a mobile ‘Money Exchange’ station
at the festival.
• Where – The fair will be held at the park in Largo de Lecidere.
• Who-All other tour packages for the cruise ship tourists will be designed around this festival, so
almost all of the expected 1500 tourists will be at the fair at some point during the day. In
addition, the festival will be publicized in the social and mass media among Dili residents as well

so that at least 500-1000 local residents also attend the festival. This is aimed to be an event
that is win-win for all parties involved.

It is only early days for cruise ship tourism in Dili but research has showed that the same ships
visiting the Nusa Tenggara Timur region indicate a average in port spend of approximately $100 per
passenger and the Tiwi Island in the Northern Territory are reporting a massive $450 spend per
passenger. We are hopeful that it will be a large spend in Timor Leste, due to the high quality of
handicrafts being produced in our new nation and the interest passengers have in visiting a new and
undiscovered destinations.
Cruise ship tourism is a key in tourism sector development in this country being able to get mass
numbers in such a short time and will impact on changing the narrative of Timor Leste as a safe,
accessible and beautiful place to visit

Worldwide, the cruise industry has an annual passenger compound annual growth rate of 6.55%
from 1990 - 2019.

Your contribution to assist us in developing and operating the Dili Art and Craft & Music festival
will be integral in helping Dili and Timor Leste develop into a must see cruise ship destination
creating local employment opportunities, economic advancement and destination development.
