SUBJECT CODE:

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION: The course offered in response to the problem on non-readers and slow readers among elementary school pupils with
the end in view with equipping teachers with the appropriate teaching skills to minimize the problem or solve it altogether. This would give students
practical tips and latest teaching strategies on how to teach reading effectively so that the problem on non-readers can be forestalled.
UNIT: 3 Units
COURSE: Teaching Reading in the Elementary Grades
DAY/TIME: Friday / 5:30pm – 8:30pm
TIME ALLOTMENT: 54 hrs.

SCOPE:

This course is designed to equip students the 21 st century skills in teaching elementary reading. It will provide an avenue for the
students to integrate available technology to teach reading in the elementary which is grounded on the theories of learnings, nature, and
principles of the reading process. This would give student the necessary teaching skills based on the needs of the time through culturally-
responsive literacy practices.
At the end of the course, the students must be able to:
1. Identify the underlying theories, nature, and principles of reading process.
2. Classify the 21st century emergent readers.
3. Distinguish the different stages of reading.
4. Execute the teaching strategies in the 21st century setting
5. Integrate technology in teaching basic comprehension skills in reading
6. Contextualize the literacy appreciation skills in teaching reading
7. Utilize the available information, resources and data in teaching study skills
8. Develop authentic and localized instructional materials in support to teaching strategies in reading.
9. Create reading intervention program using the social media and technology as platform.
10. Familiarize the Phil-IRI version 2018 Reading Assessment tool in the elementary.
11. Utilize research-based instructional materials for remedial reading.
12. Create a lesson plan in teaching reading in the elementary.
13. Demonstrate teaching reading in the elementary grades.
