BACKGROUND:

Earth, our home planet, is a world unlike any other. The third planet from the sun, Earth is the
only place in the known universe confirmed to host life. With a radius of 3,959 miles, Earth is the fifth
largest planet in our solar system, and it’s the only one known for sure to have water on its surface.
Earth is also unique in terms of monikers. Every other solar system planet was named for a Greek or
Roman deity, but for at least a thousand years, some cultures have described our world using the
Germanic word “earth,”which means simply “the ground”.

The Earth has four layers: the solid crust on the outside, the mantle and the core-split between
the outer core and inner core.

The crust is everything we can see and study directly. The thinnest layer of the Earth. There
are two types of crust: the continental and oceanic crust. Oceanic crust can be found at the bottom of
the oceans or below the continental crust; it is generally harder and deeper, consisting of denser
rocks like basalt, while continental crust contains granite-type of rocks and sediments.

The mantle extends down 2,890 km, making it the thickest layer of the Earth. It makes up
about 84% of Earth’s volume. It’s made up of slightly different silicate rocks with more magnesium
and iron.

The Earth’s outer core is made up of iron and nickel and is very hot (4400 to 5000+ degrees
C). this is so hot that the iron and nickel metals are liquid. The outer core is very important to earth
as it creates something called a magnetic field. The magnetic field the outer core creates goes way
out in to space and makes a protective barrier around the earth that shields us from the sun’s
damaging solar wind.

The Earth’s inner core is made up of iron and nickel, just like the outer core, however, the
inner core is different. The inner core is so deep within the Earth that it’s under immense pressure. So
much pressure that, even though it is so hot, it is solid. The inner core is the hottest part of the Earth,
and, at over 5000 degrees C, is about as hot as the surface of the sun.

OBJECTIVES:
1.) To learn the components of the Earth through it’s layers.
2.) To know the differences of each layers, physically and chemically.
3.) To visualize the structure. of the Earth
MATERIALS:

 Clay

PROCEDURES:
1.) Provide four colors of clay for the four layers of the Earth.
2.) Represent each clay as the layers of the Earth.
3.) Make an Earth showing the layers of it,out of clay.
