ELEMENTS OF MUSIC

1. RHYTHM- rhythm may be broadly defines as everything pertaining to the duration (long or
short) of musical sounds.

2. MELODY- melody is a pleasing succession of tones forming a line of individual significance


and expressive value; also known as the tune, voice or line, in, music. Melody has direction and
range.

3. HARMONY- the simultaneous occurrence of musical tones whether consonant or dissonant. It


refers to the vertical structure of music (while melody pertains to the horizontal elements of
music.)

4. DYNAMICS- words or signs indicating degrees or changes in loudness or softness of a


musical sound or passage. It may also refer to every aspect of the execution of a given piece like
staccato or legato.

5. TEXTURE- the horizontal (melodic lines) and vertical (chords) relationship of musical
instruments, comparable to the interweaving of the warp and woof of woven fabric.

6. TIMBRE OR TONE OF COLOR- the unique or peculiar quality of a tone as sounded by a


given instrument or voice; the difference between two tones of the same pitch, duration and
intensity.

7. TEMPO- (time) the rate of speed of a composition or section, as indicated by tempo marks or
by metronome indications.

8. FORM- the overall structure or plan of a piece of music and it describes the layout of a
composition as divided into sections.

 MONOPHONIC MUSIC- represented by a single melodic line


 HOMOPHONIC MUSIC- also called “accompanied melody”, consists of a single
melodic line supported at various points by chords
 POLYPHONIC MUSIC- consist of two or more horizontal lines of individual design,
connected with each other by the vertical relationship of consonance or harmony
