Lesson Plan #16

LAB 3
Exercising

Date: Monday 5, November

Supervisor: Abbye
Lead Teacher: Leah #4

Children Receiving Specific Focus Today:

1. AAAA: Pronunciation, communicate calmly: Outside Tunnel
2. BBBB: Turn Taking, Gross Motor: Sensory Blue Blast
3. CCCC: Recognizing Letters: Language Snowballs
4. DDDD: English: Dramatic Play Doctors
5. EEEE: Communication with peers: Slide
6. FFFF: communicating needs: Outside Fishing

Preassessment and Findings:

On the child information sheet, many of the children’s interests relate to gross motor
movements. AAAA’s interests involve racing, movement, and swing sets. CCCC’s, GGGG’s,
HHHH’s, IIII’s, JJJJ’s, KKKK’s, and DDDD’s interests include dancing. EEEE’s interests involve slides.
FFFF’s, LLLL’s, MMMM’s, NNNN’s, and IIII’s interests include bikes. OOOO’s interests include
running.
Through observation, I noticed that the majority of our class will go outside every day to run
and ride bikes. I have observed that developmentally, all of our children can run and jump. I
have also observed that the gross motor activities are often the most popular ones, such as on
Monday, KKKK, OOOO, HHHH, IIII, and AAAA all wanted to play catch with each other with the
wrecking ball, rather than using it to wreck blocks.
When I asked FFFF what he thought exercise is, he said he would show me and went to an
open space and did a lunge stretch. When I asked PPPP what muscles are, she said they were
our bodies. When I asked KKKK the same question, she held up her arms in a flexing position. I
then asked her where our muscles are, and she said they were in her fingers. When I asked
GGGG what muscles are, she held up her arms in the same flexing position that KKKK did.
Many of the children said they didn’t know when I asked them what exercise is, like CCCC.
When I asked KKKK, she said that X marks the spot to treasure. When I asked AAAA what muscles
are, he said, “It’s drinking milk.” When I asked MMMM the same question he said, “They are boys,
just boys.” Through questioning many children in the lab, it is clear most of them don’t know
what the word exercise means, or know exactly what muscles are, but they have a few
associations.
I plan on teaching them the word exercise by defining it as large body movements that
strengthen our bodies and keep them healthy. I will then give them examples of different kinds
of exercises, like things they do every day like dancing and riding bikes, but also things like yoga
and weight lifting. I plan on defining muscles by defining them as the parts of our bodies that
make us move.

Ideas to be Emphasized and Overall Developmental Focus:

1. Exercising is when we move our bodies, which keeps them healthy and strong.
2. There are different kinds of exercising: cardio (running, swimming, biking, dancing), weight
lifting, calisthenics (yoga, Pilates).
3. The activities today will focus on developing hand and foot coordination through gross motor.

exercise! Exercise is when you use your muscles
and make them stronger. Your muscles are the
part of your body that you can’t see, but they
are what make you move! You have muscles in
your feet, your legs, your hands, and even your
face! Everyone feel your knees. What do they
feel like? (hard/bony) That’s because those are
your bones. Your muscles are the softer parts like
the back of your leg! (gesture to the calf)
Exercise is good for us because it keeps our
muscles strong, so that we are strong.”
“Let’s dance to a song that tells us all about
different body parts that have muscles!”
We will then dance to the song “From Head to
Toe”
2. Yoga “Boys and girls, we have a very special guest Mom

and helps them get healthy. Today, she is going
to show us how to do some yoga! Yoga is one
kind of exercise that you just use your body.
Everyone will need to spread out so we don’t hit
each other.”
Mom will then lead us through a short routine
with child-friendly yoga poses.
Transition to Self- Boys and girls let’s thank Miss Stacey for showing
Selected us how to do some yoga! Now let’s go find
