Capstone Project Idea

Problem or Need- Describe a problem that needs to be solved or a need that should be
addressed.

As an Instructor of Urdu Language at DLI, I feel there is too much focus on the instruction and
instructors. Too many trainings are thrown at instructors without measuring the productivity, are
these trainings really being applied in class to produce well trained students who are actually
performing their job efficiently. How effectively are the instructors in applying the acquired
skills and knowledge in the classroom, especially when DLI is investing money in the instructors
who are pursuing a degree program.

For most instructors pursuing educational advancement are a path for professional development,
rank advancement and job security. The actual purpose is lost, which is implementation of the
acquired knowledge in class that would benefit the students and ultimately achieve the desired
goal set by DLI. This has resulted in professional jealousy amongst peers and cynicism towards
management, ultimately affecting the students.
The question is, “Is this just a perception or is it actually happening?”

Target Users Characterize the user/learner population.

The learner population will be the teachers. As DLI has a diverse group of faculty members, this
situation needs to be accommodated. Another important thing about learner population is to
determine their attitude towards the management and peers., weather there is an element of
cynicism or jealousy.

Solution Describe a possible solution to the problem.

Possible solution is training and workshops of faculty members, so that they, just not develop
skills to perform their job in the classroom, but they can learn things like conflict resolution,
building a harmonious relationship between leadership, management and peers. Trainings on
healthy competition and focusing on the learner’s productivity rather than just instructors and
instruction.

What is the final product you envision? And how it will address the problem?

The final product that I envision, keeping in mind my course is preparing training material
focusing on building relationship amongst faculty, management and leadership.
Organizing workshops and training material where all DLI employees learn about tolerance,
appreciation for each other and developing trust in the management and leadership. Also,
evaluating if this is helping to bring about a change in the working environment.
When employees are working in a healthy positive environment their productivity automatically
increase. They start thinking about the organization and fulfilling their purpose and reaching for
their goals rather than just about themselves and getting ahead in the race everyone is running.
