CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

In the Philippines teenagers now is a little bit aggressive than before

especially in many things and they don’t even bother now to know what is really

right and wrong. All they know is they did a thing because they want it. The

attitude of this kind of thinking is not helpful and sometimes it causes trouble for

them. They are now facing a modern and liberated society that can lead them to

more mistake of their lives. Teenagers are more liberated in terms of many

things like lack of self-control, lack of self-discipline, and lack of self-respect. Not

like before, the teenagers in the country has more conservative and they are

more focus on their studies. They also value their parent’s opinion on what life

ahead for them and follow their parents advise more than their friends’ opinion

rather than wasting their time on something that is not good for their future.

Research regarding conflict-tactics used by parents is often contradictory,

most significantly regarding whether there are negative effects following the use

of harsh discipline and, if so, what these may be. Research suggests that the use

of harsh discipline is significantly related to the use of abusive child rearing

whenever the child is a parent (Steinmetz, 1977), and to the existence of conflict

within families (Simons, Whitbeck, Conger, & ChyiIn, 1991). Subsequently, high

amounts of conflict have been shown to negatively impact self-esteem (Pawlak &

Klein, 1997).
Understanding the effects of harsh discipline on children, and more

importantly if it has any long-term effects is important because parents,

educators and caregivers are often unsure as to which method of discipline is

best to use with children. The purpose of the present study was to examine the

relationship between various factors important to child development, which may

be influenced by of the use of harsh discipline. These factors include self-esteem,

parenting styles, conflict management techniques, and ultimately whether or not

harsh discipline was used on the participants of this study. Studying relationships

between parenting styles and conflict management techniques is beneficial in

further understanding the effects of the quality of parent-child relationships.

Studying relationships between the use of harsh discipline and the child

having suffered physical assault is important in determining if the severity of

harsh discipline is a predictor of harsh physical and/or verbal abuse. And

ultimately, studying the relationships between the use of harsh discipline and

self-esteem is important because there is strong evidence that children exposed

to harsh or abusive parenting are at risk for outcomes including delinquency,

academic failure, difficulties with peers, and substance abuse (Simons, et al.

1991); behaviours which ultimately affect our communities.

The difference between the age and the atmosphere f the parents and the

children where they grow from are way too far from each other that can lead

into misconception that will result into a quarrel between a parent and his

children. This invokes the parents to become stricter because the generation of
today is more liberated than before. This leads the researcher to find out the

effects of having a strict parent during their teenage years.

in handling theses students with a strict parent.

recommendations that might help the future researchers to widen their

ideas about the specific topic.

Scope and Delimitation

This study is only limited to the study of the effects of having a strict

parent during their teenage life of the students of Saint William’s School of San

Marcelino, Inc., San Marcelino, Zambales during the second semester of the

school year 2019 – 2020.
