Brief 3 Magazines and Online

I am using an image of a 17-year-old female on my front cover of the first issue and a 17-year-old
male on my second cover, as they fit the target demographic, the audience will feel they can
relate to them, they will be dressed in casual clothes, (fitting in with mainstream fashion). She will
be photographed in a combination of rural and urban areas, and he will be photographed in an
urban area, these are places most readers will feel they can relate to. I will use a slightly low angle
shot for the female, this connotes confidence and empowerment; this subverts patriarchal
ideologies that are often reflected onto women. She will be standing up with quite a neutral facial
expression, and indirect gaze with the camera to give a less intense feel to the central image, her
eyes will be directed slightly to the right, this will make the image look more casual, as well as
subverting a common convention of magazines. They male will be positioned in a very relaxed way
and will be shown as very jovial and calm to subvert the stereotypical images of men looking
intimidating and serious in magazine covers, this will allow the target audience to relate to him as
they are fun loving. He also has facial piercings and I aim to subvert the idea that people with
facial piercings are angry or intimidating. I will use images of males and females on the contents
page to make sure I represent as many social groups as possible.
I intend to appeal to the target audience by ensuring the female on the cover is someone they feel
they can relate to, in addition to this I will appeal to the audience by using bold, bright, eye-catching
colours for the typography on the front cover, and by ensuring that these standout against the image,
this should give the magazine quite a fun, light-hearted feel. As well as this I will carry the same colour
scheme over to the contents page and use many images on the contents page to keep it visually
interesting. In addition to this I will ensure that I use appropriate lexis to engage readers, I will use a
casual, informal mode of address.

To make the magazine fit the industry requirements I will place the masthead across the top of the
page, as well as this I am going to place the cover lines around the artist in the central image, to make
it clear that the image is the focus of the cover. I also intend on taking my photographs as medium
shots to allow the reader to see the artists outfit as well as their face. In addition to this, in order to
engage readers, I will have a call to action on my contents page (social media or website links) as this
would be more engaging to the target audience.

In both editions of the magazine I will include cover lines about current artists (such as Billie Eilish,
Tyler, The Creator etc) as well as older artists who are still releasing music (such as the Foo Fighters, or
Morrissey).

I intend to represent both males and females on my website, making sure I have plenty of photographs
to keep the website very visual as this will appeal to the target audience, this will also allow me to make
the website very colourful (whilst still conforming to the overall colour scheme). I will select people who
fit within the target demographic, as these will be people the audience can easily relate to. In addition to
this I will again make sure to use locations the target audience are familiar with in order for them to feel
they can relate to this too.

I will use the same typographies and colour schemes as have been used on the magazine covers and
contents pages on my website as this will help to create a very clear sense of brand identity between the
magazine and its website. The website will include exclusive photographs and articles that are not
included in the magazine in order to attract the target audience as well as the (visual-audio clip), this can
be done through use of buzz words, which create a sense of excitement. I will also use the magazine’s
masthead (Interlude) as the title of the website, I will use the same typography for the titles and
subtitles on the page. I will use a much more simple sans serif clear font for the main bulk of the writing
on the page, to ensure it is completely legible and easy to read. I can layout the banner across the top of
the website in a similar way to the Hearst website where the logo, in this case, the masthead is
positioned at the top left-hand side of it

The website will use a very informal and casual mode of address to keep it very easy to read in a way
that would appeal to the target audience, it will not come across as patronising, but rather in a friendlier
way. A way in which I plan to make the website interesting and engage the audience, this will help to
encourage them to return to it on a regular basis, is by adding a ‘weekly playlist’ so they will return to
the website to see what is on the weekly playlist, which will include music of all different genres to
appeal to as many different members of the target audience as I possibly can.
I will link my products to demonstrate their digitally convergent nature by ensuring that I add the
website link onto the magazines, this will serve as a call to action for the reader. Use of ‘buzz words’
will help create a sense of excitement within statements such as ‘Read the new and exclusive interview
on our website’. As well as this on the website I will include images of the magazine’s front covers as a
way to get website viewers to purchase and read the magazine for the content they cannot get online.

In addition to this I will include social media links and a link to the website on the magazine’s contents
page, and will encourage readers to buy the print version of the magazine, if they view the website
first.
