How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate
meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? (approx. 400 words)

Product 1

In my first magazine I intend to use the four areas of the media framework to communicate meaning
and meet the brief using signs and signifiers that will communicate different messages including
genre, regulation, feminism/ gender identity, narrativity and the use of fandom. I will use signs such as
colour palettes and images to communicate the genre of the magazine, as well as words within the
cover lines that signify that this is a film magazine, for example ‘actress’ as this is usually specific to
film or theatre. I will also use quotes in the feature article cover line to make it evident that this is a film
magazine as it will draw attention to the actress’ personal story. I will also use features that are typical
for the codes and conventions of magazines, such as a puff that can be used for advertising to catch
the audience’s attention and persuade them to purchase the magazine. In order to ensure that I reach
the regulation requirement of the brief I will use a logo. I will ensure that the magazine will attract the
target audience (a 16-25-year-old middle and upmarket media-literate audience) by ensuring that my
use of narrativity is versatile and will interest them due to features such as relatability and inspiration. I
will also ensure that this allows me to include the creativity of fandom within the magazine as I will use
personal pronouns and direct language to ensure that the audience are being directly addressed and
they can form and emotional response to the content. I will ensure that these features are significantly
evident within the interview. I intend to try and reach the requirements due to my inspiration from
media theorists including Jenkins, Barthes, Todorov, Neale, Gauntlett, Van Zoonen and Livingstone
and Lunt.

Product 2

In my second magazine I intend to use the four areas of the media framework to communicate
meaning and meet the brief using signs and signifiers that will communicate different messages to the
audience including genre, regulation, gender identity, narrativity, fandom and relatability as well as the
emotional connection that this could create for audiences and how this impacts their perception of the
magazine due to the intentions that are evident. I will use a colour palette of blue, pink, gold and white
as blue is a stereotypically masculine colour, emphasising the actor’s gender, however pink is
stereotypically feminine, white may represent purity and innocence and gold represents power,
strength or authority. This will be representative of the actor’s story and will act as a sign to the
audience to assist them in their understanding of the content within the magazine. In the main image I
will ensure that the actor challenges gender stereotypes to relate to his struggle with his identity,
creating a link between his representation and his story, whilst also creating a sense of power and
pride. The main image on the front cover of the magazine will be taken of the actors side profile,
which will be placed opposite the over lines, creating leading lines and persuading the audience to
read them, which will then encourage them to buy the magazine because it will form an emotional
response for them. This will also help me to communicate the genre of the magazine (film) because I
will use genre specific language that relates to film, relating to the typical codes and conventions of
film magazines. I will also use the puff on the front cover as a form of advertisement, relating to film to
fit the brief and persuade audiences to buy the magazine. I will ensure that I use features that relate
to the brief in the interview within the magazine to reach the necessities of my target audience. I will
be using the beliefs and ideas of media theorists such as Jenkins, Barthes, Todorov, Neale, Gauntlett,
Van Zoonen and Livinstone and Lunt to ensure that I cover the four areas of the media framework
and relate to the brief.

How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and
understanding of the digitally convergent nature of your media production? (approx. 100
words)

I plan to link my media products to demonstrate my knowledge and understanding of the digitally
convergent nature of my media production by creating links between the genre features and synergy
within my products (magazine and website). I will link my two magazines by creating a relationship/
link between the genre of the stories that they feature. Both stories will be based on people who have
struggled in the past but have found success within acting and have grown as people. This will show
that I understand what my target audience enjoys reading as they are similar stories, however I will
also ensure that there are differences between them to appeal to a wider target audience as although
my target audience are likely to be similar people in regard to what they like to read about, they will
have different identities and experiences. This means that by creating two stories that relate to what
my target audience likes but making them different it satisfies more people’s needs. I will also ensure
that there is a link between my mastheads as this is a significant part of the brand’s identity that
audiences will recognise. Additionally, I will ensure that there are links between the layout of my
contents pages as this is conventional of most magazines. I will also ensure that the features of my
website relate to my magazines, making them coherent.
