Statement of intent: Product 1:

My magazine covers will represent women in an empowering way

rather than in an overly sexualised way which is often used in
magazines featuring women on the front cover. I think the target
audience of my magazine would reject any patriarchal representation
so to cater to this I will include images of women feeling
empowered by clothing and feeling confident in their bodies rather
than being represented for men’s eyes. They will also be represented
for what they do and their well-paid role in society rather than her
traditional gender identity. She will be shown in expensive and
materialistic clothing and eb presented as a big character in the
media industries. This will challenge bell hooks ideas on the media
industry but will also meet the needs of my target audience. I will also
be using stereotypical props and lighting to present this using mis en
scene in my work. This fits in with Halls representation theory. My
model will be shown in a light where she is at the top this fits in with
the aspiration of my target audience. For my second magazine my
model will be photographed in a calm setting. I will be using
appropriate media language in this magazine such as a sans-serif
typeface to give the product a modern look that will appeal to my
target audience. The colour pallets will also suit the subject matter.
This ties in with Barthes theory on the signifier and the signified as
the colour will connotate meaning. And Neals theory of repetition and
difference. I will get inspiration from existing genre conventions from
other lifestyle magazines and adapt these to fit my target audience’s
needs and wants. To show an understanding of media regulation I will
include a logo for Hearst Magazines UK.
Product 2
For my websites I am going to include celebrity culture
and subscriptions to the magazines. I think my target audience would
follow a lot of the celebrity culture and so to include this in my
website I will have hyperlinks to stories about celebrities with the
same idea of empowerment and debunking gender roles. These
celebrities will also be represented in a materialistic and powerful
way, this will challenge van Zoonen’s ideas on the media industry but
will meet my target audience’s needs. There will also
be representations of all body types, age and gender, the gender
rolls will be challenged, and this argues against Butler’s gender
theory. For my second website I will include specific media language
to cater to my target audiences needs and wants, this will be including
an easy-to-read lexis and hyperlinks to different stories that the
viewer can read more on. There will be images to match the
stories which follows Steve Neale’s theory of genre. To show
understandings of social media I can make an Instagram page
dedicated to the magazine and have links to the website and for
exclusive interviews on there. This is also a good example
of intertextuality

Media Convergence:
I am going to include call to action on my magazine with special
offers and content to lead readers to the website and Instagram page. I
will state that viewers can see exclusive behind the scenes videos and
interviews. Before I have the website go live, I will make sure it is
accessible through mobile devices and that the links will take readers
to the Instagram and Twitter account for the magazine. I have chosen
these specific social media platforms as the target audience are most
likely to be active on them.
