GENERAL PHYSICS 2

Self-test:

1. List the forms of energy into which the energy from a car battery is converted.
Electrical Energy
Mechanical (Kinetic) Energy
Chemical Energy
Heat Energy

2. What is the undesirable form of energy produced by both liquid bulbs and electric
motors?
When we put electrical energy into a bulb and the bulb produces light (which is the
desired form of output from a bulb), but we also get heat from the bulb which is the
undesired form of energy from an electric bulb. Unwanted sound and unwanted heat
energy is undesired form of energy in the electric motors.

3. What happens to the temperature of an electric battery when the battery is discharging?
Why?
Discharging a battery causes it to heat up, and that increase in heat is proportional to the
current. It is because the battery has internal resistance, and the current must overcome
this resistance. So, the electrical energy is converted into heat, ot the electrons crash into
poorly-conductive parts of the electrodes, heating the material up.

4. An electric motor requires 1760 joules of electric energy to produce 1086 joules of
mechanical energy. What is the efficiency of the motor?
Solution:
𝑊𝑜𝑢𝑡
%Eff = × 100
𝑊𝑖𝑛
1086J
= 1760J × 100
%Eff = 61.7045J or 62J

5. A flashlight battery uses of 110 joules of chemical energy to supply 100 joules of electric
energy to the flashlight bulb. What is the efficiency of the battery?
Soultion:
𝑊𝑜𝑢𝑡
%Eff = × 100
𝑊𝑖𝑛
100J
= 110J × 100
%Eff = 90.9091J or 91J

6. How much mechanical energy will be provided by a motor that is 70% efficient and
requires 1960 joules of electric energy?
Solution:
𝑊𝑜𝑢𝑡
%Eff = × 100
𝑊𝑖𝑛
𝑊𝑜𝑢𝑡
70% = × 100
𝑊𝑖𝑛

Wout = 1372J
