PROJECT HABITICA

PROJECT PROPO S AL

The goal of Project Habitica is to create an application that motivates

and encourage people to f inish their current tasks at hand by
providing them wit h various re wa rds, social motivation, sense of
achievement and boosts in their self -esteem . It’s a social application
that doubles a s a task manager. The application is similar to a game
where pla ye rs can customize their a vatar or hubs but the currency
can only be obtained by f inishing real lif e tasks. People can socialize
with one another online, f inding the perf ect companion can moti vate
you in doing you r task!

B ACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Procrastination is one of the most common problem people f ace

when they t ry to f inish a certain task or goal. It af fects an individual’s
time, causing to delay or put of f something wh ich are previously
planned. The anxiety of delayin g or putting off something can also
ref lect on an individual’s mind and may affect attention and
concentration. It considerably wastes an individual’s sign if icant time,
if there is something supposed to perf orm. Procrastination prevents
individuals f rom reaching their object ives and goals, it f urnishes a
sense of discomf ort, it is a s ymbol of laziness, and it keeps the things
accumulatin g. Alo ng with them, it keeps an individual stuck in a
problem and prevents them f rom moving ahead in lif e. People f ind it
diff icult to f ocus on perf orming other chores till the y h ave f inished
the one in hand. This is the reason we decided to tackle this pr oblem
and help people increase their productivit y and the qualit y or results.

ST ATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Before we came up with this proposal, we ha ve a goal to create a

solution to a problem that everyo ne has but of ten ignore. W e
researched about multiple problems and came up with a very
common one, Procrastination. Most people tend to procrastinate
specially if the task is either hard or they are not interested enough
in doing it. W hen we concluded our surve y, it sho wed that eve ryone
procrastinated before, some do it of ten, others, not so much. Some
also rush their tasks few days bef ore the deadline even though they
we're given months to prepare f or it, this often results to the qualit y
of the completed task to be lower than expected. Theref ore, if we
can f ix the problem with procrast ination, not only we could make
people more productive and passio nate than usual, we can also
improve the qualit y of tasks that has been completed.

LITER ATURE REV IEW

Here, we asked some people if they really tend to procrastina te

sometimes and what are the things that could motivate them to work
more productively, and here are the results.

Here we can see that 100% of the people we asked procrastinated

before, 61% of them, most of the time. This is one of the most
common problems that are of ten overlooked by many people. So we
took the initiative t o try and deal with this problem ourselves.
PROPOSED STUDY

Our project habitica will be an online social application similar to a

social game where people with sim ilar interest s can share their
experiences, motivate and help each other with their tasks and
hobbies. The current platf orm will b e for mobile android and IOS
devices but if given the chance we cou ld also port the application on
PCs. This app can be used by prett y much everyone b ut students
and adults with jo bs can benef it wit h this the most, we also aim to
make this application f easible to everyone rega rdless of gender and
age.

METHODS OF CO LLECTING AND AN ALYZI NG D AT A

Af ter looking f or a potential problem, the next step is to f irst, make

sure that the problem really exists. Theoretically it poses a problem
but we cannot gauge on how bad it is just by personal experience
and opinion, so the best wa y to handle this is by ha ving a surve y.
The internet makes everything easier no wadays, so we created an
online surve y and handed it to everyone. W e asked them a total of
f our questions. First is, "Do you e ve r f eel the need to do an important
task but you lack the motivation or w ill to do so?". Surprisin gly, out
of 26 responses, all of them answered Yes. Af ter that we a sked them,
"how of ten?", and 62% said most of the time and 38% said
sometimes. The third question we asked is, "W hat is the best wa y o r
thing that can help you moti vate yourself on doing a certain task?",
and out of all the unique answe rs, t wo of them stand out f rom the
rest, the f irst one is Money or Re wa rds and the second is company
or havin g to do it with other people. The last question we asked them
is, "W hat are the possible upgrades you would want to have on a
plain to -do list in o rder to motivate an d encourage you to f inish your
tasks?". Out of all the unique answers on the f ourth question, the
answer "having to do it with other people makes the tasks easier" i s
the most common among the rest. Theref ore, this concludes our
analysis that in ord er f or people to be motivated on doing their tasks,
it re quires some form of reward and social motivation f rom other
people with similar interest.
ADDRESSING THE PROB LEM

No w that we already kno w the problem, and we are certain that it

exists. W e also know the conditions on how we could deal with the
problem, all that's lef t is to create a solution where e veryone could
benef it f rom it. The initial idea is to create an a pplication where we
could provide both re wards and social motivation to people, but here
we hit our f irst wall. In order f or us to give a reward f or others, we
must have this re ward f rom ourselves f irst, and the re wa rd must be
good enough to motivate peopl e to do their tasks otherwise they
won't bother doing it. The more people who uses our app, the more
re wards we need to provide. So, we need to think of a way to provide
some sort of reward to people without running out of this re ward
ourselves. Here we thought about creating a game, ga me is a f orm
of entertainment and everyone lo ves entertainment. People even
spend real money just to buy digita l credits that they can spend
inside the game, and other people earn real money thro ugh games
as we ll. Game cre dits ticks a ll of the boxes f or the requ irements we
need because game credits give t he sense of achievement and
satisf action and we wil l ne ver run out of rewards to give awa y, since
we can generate credits digitally. But then we f aced the second wall
of problem. W e need to give these credits only when they f inish a
task, but there's no wa y f or us to know if they did f inish their task.
W e can't also hand these credits too much or it will lose its value
and credits with lo w va lue will not motivate people and they can just
exploit the system by f aking completed tasks. So here we decided to
balance out the credits system by putting a limit to it and so far it
brought us here. T o a social game application re volvin g in f inishing
tasks and socializing with other people with similar in terests and
hobbies.
