Worksheet chapter 1&2

1. two elastic bars whose proportions are shown below are to absorb the same

amount of energy delivered by axial forces. Neglect the effect of stress

concentrations, compare the stress in the two bars.

2. The 12-mm-diameter steel rod ABC has been bent into the shape shown. Knowing

that E = 200 GPa and G = 77.2 GPa, determine the deflection of end C caused by the

150-N force.

3. Using E = 200 GPa, determine the strain energy due to bending for the steel beam

and loading shown. (Ignore the effect of shearing stresses.)

4. In the truss shown, all members are made of the same material and have the

uniform cross-sectional area indicated. Determine the strain energy of the truss

when the load P is applied.

5. Define what is means by “resilience” or “strain energy”. A) Derive the formula for

strain energy resulting from bending of a beam (neglect shear). B) a beam, simply

supported at its ends, is of 4m span and carries at 3m from the left-hand support,

a load of 20𝑘𝑁. If 𝑰 𝑖𝑠 120𝑥10−6 𝑚4 and 𝐸 = 200𝐺𝑁/𝑚2 , fine the deflection under

the load using the formula derived in part(a).

6. Compare the strain energies of two bars of the same material and length and

carrying the same gradually applied compressive load if one is 25 𝑚𝑚 diameter

throughout and the other is turned down to 20 𝑚𝑚 diameter over half its length,

the remainder being 25 𝑚𝑚 diameter. B) if both bars are subjected to pure torsion

only, compare the torsional strain energies stored if the shear stress in both bars is

limited to 75 𝑀𝑁/𝑚2.
7. Two cylindrical rods, one of steel and the other of brass, are joined at C and

restrained by rigid supports at A and E. For the loading shown and knowing that

𝐸𝑠 = 200 𝐺𝑃𝑎 and 𝐸𝑏 = 105 𝐺𝑃𝑎, determine (a) the reactions at A and E, (b) the

deflection of point C. before the load applied point E is displaced 0.002mm. (using

force method)

8. Find the reaction forces using the force method for the given beam below. Where

EI is constant.
