Long answer type questions (10 marks):

Q-13 A herringbone gear is to be used as a single stage speed reducer for transmitting 27 kW
power from the pinion rotating at 3000 rpm to a gear. The reduction ratio is 3.8. The tooth
system is 200 stub- teeth involute, while helix angle is 300. The face width should not
exceed twice the pitch diameter. Design the gear pair.
Q-14 Design a pair of parallel helical gears made of 20 teeth pinion meshing with a 100 teeth
gear. The pinion rotates at 720 rpm. The normal pressure angle is 20° while the helix
angle is 25°. The face width is 40 mm and the normal module is 4 mm. The pinion as well
as gear is made of steel with ultimate strength of 600 N/mm2 and heat treated to a surface
hardness of 300 BHN. The service factor and the factor of safety are 1.5 and 2
respectively.
Q-15 Design a pair of parallel helical gears made of 20 teeth pinion meshing with a 120 teeth
gear. The pinion rotates at 720 rpm. The normal pressure angle is 20° while the helix
angle is 35°. The face width is 50 mm and the normal module is 4 mm.

Q-16 Design a spur gear drive required to transmit 45 KW at a pinion speed of 800 rpm. The
velocity ratio is 3.5:1.the teeth are 20 degree full depth involute with 18 teeth on pinion.
Both the pinion & gear are made of steel.

Q-22 A herringbone gear is to be used as a single stage speed reducer for transmitting 30 kW
power from the pinion rotating at 3000 rpm to a gear. The reduction ratio is 3.8. The tooth
system is 200 full depth involute system , while helix angle is 300. The face width should
not exceed thrice the pitch diameter. Design the gear pair

Q-23 Design a pair of parallel helical gears made of 20 teeth pinion meshing with a 100 teeth

Q-24The following data is given for a steel spur gear pair transmitting 7.5 KW power from an
electric motor running at 1440 rpm to a machine running at 480 rpm. No of teeth on
pinion is 18 ,Centre distance is 216mm, face width is 10 times the module, allowable
bending stress for pinion & gear are 160 MPa. , surface hardness is 300 BHN tooth system
is 20 degree full depth involute system.

Q-25A pair of straight teeth spur gear is to transmit 25KW when pinion rotates at 300rpm.the
velocity ratio is 1:3 ,the allowable static stress for the gear & pinion materials are 120MPa
& 100 MPa respectively, The pinion have 15 teeth & its face width is 15 times the
module. Determine module, face width & pitch circle diameters of both pinion & gear
from stand point of strength only, taking into consideration the effect of dynamic loading
assume 20 Degree full depth involute pair with ordinary cutting.

Q-21 A pair of bevel gears, with 200 pressure angle, consist of a 20 teeth pinion meshing with a
30 teeth gear. The module is 5mm, While the face width is 30 mm.The material for the
pinion and gear is steel 50C4 (Sut=850N/mm2).The gear teeth are lapped and ground
(class-3) and the surface hardness is 350 BHN. The pinion rotates at 500rpm and receives
4.5Kw power from the electric motor. Determine the factor of safety against bending
failure and against pitting failure.

1800 rpm. Speed ratio is 10. Materials are steel & phosphorus bronze. Phosphorus bronze

are of 14.5º composite form. The allowable static stress for both the gears is 55 MPa. If
the pinion transmits 2.75 kW at 1100 r.p.m., find the module and number of teeth on each
gear from the stand point of strength and check the design from the standpoint of wear.
Take surface endurance limit as 630 MPa and modulus of elasticity for cast iron as 84
kN/mm2.

Length of connecting rod = 950 mm. When the crank has turned through 30° from top
dead centre, the pressure on the piston is 1 N/mm2 and the torque on the crank is
maximum. Any other data required for the design may be assumed.
