Title
(Cultural Dance and Health: A Review of the Literature)
I. Summary:
The article is about the importance of physical activity to our physical and mental health.
It mainly discussed about the benefits one could gain when practicing physical activity
specifically cultural dance which is a type of physical activity that is more acceptable than
the other physical activities in a certain culture. Some of the benefits of cultural dance
that have been studied are; preventing excessive weight gain, cardiac arrest, reducing
stress and increasing life satisfaction. Cultural dance is a practical form of physical activity
to promote physical and mental health among subgroup of populations that often have
lower amounts of participation in physical activity.
II. Reflection:
The specific part of the particle that strikes us the most is the part when cultural
dance was specifically included as one of the physical activities that could really help us
improve our physical and mental health which are big concerns in our lives. As we can
observe youths nowadays, they are only focused on learning modern dance and tend to
forget the cultural dance. Although cultural dance is not as popular as modern dance, it
should still be practiced as it contain pieces of our history and livelihood that would
otherwise be lost. Though it is not as complex as modern dance it still contributes to our
health specifically mental health. As when we move, we feel good; it’s common
knowledge and everyone knows dancing is good for us and has positive effects on our
physical wellbeing. When participating in forms of dance which engage the sense of
touch—one of the first senses humans experience.
The article would improve the physical activity participation of many who have read
it as it points out the health benefits of being active in physical activities especially dance
like cultural dance. Being socially engaged leads to increased happiness, reduced stress,
and a stronger immune system. In addition, it does not only contributes to our physical
and mental health, it is also our way to tell other people on what are the things that they
need to know about our culture, the way that other people could have respect, knowledge
and give importance to our traditions and norms.
