American Pastoral

This novel was written by Philip Roth, who was one the most important American writers from
the last decade. This novel was awarded by Pulitzer Prize.

The writer depicts the American society in the earlies 60s, in the middle of Vietnam War. The
main character, called “Swedish Levov”, is a remarkable, popular and trustworthy sportive
man, married with New Jersey Miss, both have a little girl, called Merry, stubborn and sharpe
tongue teenager.

The novel makes an hectic argument between father and daughter, due to different point of
view about Vietnam War. Merry guilt her parents, because she thinks which they are
responsible, and being part of that shadow, unfair, violent American system.

Few by few, each argument is louder, makes no sense, deliver to Merri to goes away her
house. Her parents have no control about her daughter, and begins to appear unavoidable
arguments between them as well.

Furthermore, the author depicts about Judaism, and his conflict with other religions,
specifically, catholic religion. In part due to Roth was Jewish, as well as Levov.

I think which this is a remarkable, fascinating, and unpredictable novel, which makes perfectly
the current American society.
