Grade Level: Duration:

Date December 9, 2019 Quarter
Grrade 12 (Galileo
and Dalton)
120 min.
Time: 8:00- 10:15, 11:15-12:15, 1
1:00-2:00

DLP No. SUBJECT: PHYSICAL SCIENCE

Learning The learner:

Competency Code
1. Give evidence or and describe the S11/12PS_111a-

formation of heavier elements during the 2

star formation and evolution S11/12PS_111a-

2. Write the nuclear fusion reactions that take 3
place in stars that lead to the formation
S11/12PS_111a-
of new elements.
4
3. Describe how elements than iron formed

Key Concepts

1. Objectives The students will be to:

 Briefly discuss stellar nucleosynthesis or fusion
 Discuss other processes that led to other elements
 Write out fusion reactions involve
2. Content We are all made of Star Stuff (Formation of Heavier Elements)

3. Learning  Physical Science Teaching guide for Senior High School

Resources
4. Procedures

Introduction  Review of the Big Bang and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis.

Activity  Introduce the objective of the lesson.
 Introduce the following list of important terms that learners will
encounter: fusion, stellar nucleosynthesis, proton-proton chain reaction,
Triple Alpha process, Alpha ladder, CNO cycle, main sequence star, red
giant, supernova explosion, supernova, r- process, and s-process

1
Instruction/  Discuss how hydrogen and helium atoms in stars began combining in
Delivery nuclear fusion reaction ( PPC reaction, Triple Alpha process and CNO
cycle) once hydrogen-helium stars had formed from the action of gravity
using a PowerPoint presentation.

Practice  Review lesson using a concept map with mostly blank spaces. Let the
learners complete the diagram by filling the missing terms.
 Have the learners write all the equations involve in the Alpha ladder using
the periodic table.
 Explain that the feature of the alpha ladder, as well as the rules of
stability, results in the odd number elements being less abundant than the
even number elements beside them on the periodic table.
 Emphasize that many processes allowed for the odd numbered elements ,
including supernova nucleosynthesis, radioactive decay , electron capture
, nuclear fission, and cosmic ray spallation.

Enrichment  Brief discussion of the man-made nuclei, presentation of the

performance task.
 Mention to them that there were few elements that were laboratory made
since they did not emerge from the major nucleosynthesis reactions or their
minor processes. These elements were Americium to Lawrencium as well as
some recently discovered elements like Livermorium.
 Assign learners to research on one of these elements after the class to be
used for the performance task.

Assessment/ A. Give a five items quiz

Evaluation B. Let the learners create an output that discusses the origin of the man-
made elements. In their output, they must discuss the elements basic
characteristics. They must also give a brief timeline leading up to the
element’s discovery.
1. Assignment/ Let the students answer the following questions:
Agreement
1. What are the ways to select related literature?
2. How are you going to cite your sources?

2. Remarks

2
3. Reflections
