HW

1
PLEASE ANSWER THE FOLLOWING COMPLETELY
IN 1 WHOLE SHEET OF YELLOW PAPER TO BE
SUBMITTED ON WED (CLASS HOURS).
HW 1
1. An open test tube at 293K is filled at the bottom
with 12.1 cm of Hg and 5.6 cm of water is placed
above the Hg. Calculate the pressure at the bottom
of the test tube if the atmospheric pressure is 756
mm Hg. Use a density of 13.55 g/cm3 for Hg and
0.998 g/cm3 for water. Give the answer in terms of
dyne/cm2, psia, and kN/m2.
HW 1
2. An open U-tube manometer,
similar to the given Figure, is being
used to measure the absolute
pressure, Pa, in a vessel containing
air. The pressure Pb is atmospheric
pressure, which is 754 mmHg. The
liquid in the manometer is water
having a density of 1000 kg/m3.
Assume that the density 𝝆𝑩 is 1.30
kg/m3 and that the distance Z is
very small. The reading R is 0.415
m. Calculate Pa in psia and kPa.
HW 1
3. There are two fluids in an
open end manometer. Fluid 1 is
glycerin (12.4 kN/m3) and fluid
2 is carbon tetrachloride (15.57
kN/m3). If the open end is
exposed to the atmosphere at
101.325 kPa, h2 = 32 cm and h1
= 10 cm, what is the absolute
pressure at the closed end of
the manometer if it is occupied
by fluid 1?
HW 1
4. In the shown figure,
liquid A weighs 53.5 lb/ft3
and liquid B weighs 78.8
lb/ft3. A manometer liquid
N is mercury. If the
pressure at B is 30 psi, find
the pressure at A in psi.
