BOCCE – Italian ‘bowls’

APPWERTE (AP-WER-TE) – Indigenous ball rolling game

Resources:
- Bocce Balls
- Hula hoops
- Cones
- Witches hats

(I) Gather Ss at bus stop & mark the roll (5 min)

Tell Students to get changed and to sit in the rectangle set up with orange cones
* set this up behind the lanes*. Get Ss to repeat where the allocated area is to
make sure they were listening.

(II) SET-UP THE AREA (10 min)

T to set up coloured lanes (same colour)- 2 parallel lines of cones of the same
colour to indicate playing area, 2 meters between each lane. First play bocce
with the hula hoop as the ‘target’- thus hula hoops near the end of lane.

(III) Ss get to allocated area, sit, objectives & demo (5 min)

Talk on objectives
- As our unit of study for prac focuses on cultural & indigenous games, we are going to
be playing a ball rolling game.
- There are two sides to this game- there is an ancient Italian game called bocce &
there is an indigenous aboriginal/TSI version of this game called Apwerte which is
very similar.
- The aim of both versions of the game / thing they have in common is to roll the ball
toward a target to score points.

DEMO
- do a demonstration of how to roll a bocce ball…. Under arm roll, under arm
throw & **underarm flick*. EMPHASISE that there will be no OVERARM throw.
- Ask a Ss to demonstrate the different ways of throwing.

IV) SORT OUT TEAMS (5 min)

- Ss split into groups of 4 (each have coloured lanes set up), T will count Ss (1, 2, 3 & 4
you’re in the first *name colour* lane, off you go).
- Ss remain in their zones entire prac

V) Warm up/stretch- Rotate arms , criss cross arms etc…. (1 min)

1) BOCCE with hula hoop. * T asks one Ss to demo rolling ball into the hoop). Explain that
groups of 4 need to split into 2 & become separate teams. Every time gets in the hoop, 1
point allocated. (10 min)

2) APWERTE- T replaces hula hoop with 2 witches hats (or cones) right in the middle of each
lane. The witches hats will be about 1-2 feet apart & horizontal to where Ss roll ball. (10
min)

T will tell the S, now 2 people from your group on one side of the lane, and 2 on the other
end. Aim is to get the ball through the cones, and every time it is one point….

3) COMPETITION!!

T will take a vote on whether Ss want to compete in Bocce or Apwerte.
