1. INTRODUCTION
This report covers design of GAS CYLINDER BASKET, a closed top container. The size of
the basket is 1330 (L) x 600 (W) x 1450 (H) mm and has a capacity to hold 3 nos. of
Oxygen/Acetylene gas cylinder. The purpose of Analysis is to check the Integrity of Structural
members.

Methodology
The Structural analysis is done in STADD PRO software. The structural members are first
modelled and then the applicable loads and moments are applied on the members for analysis.
The GAS CYLINDER BASKET is also designed for lifting condition, while lifted by the forklift and
lifting lug. Pay Eyes, Sling & Shackle calculation is done manually as per BS EN 12079-1: 2006,
DNV 2.7-1.

Assumptions:
The following are the assumptions which are considered for the Analysis:

1. It is assumed that the material behaviour is linear elastic and changes in the shape &
orientation of the body are small.
2. The material of construction is assumed to be isotropic and homogenous.
3. Boundary conditions do not change from the point of load application to the final
deformed shape.
4. It is assumed that all loads are gradually applied to their full magnitude.

Material of construction
The following material of construction is used in analysis.

Loads considered
1. Self-weight of the GAS CYLINDER BASKET structure (S) = 750 kg (Max. load) including
structure, side mesh cover, Top/Bottom plate, etc.
2. Payload (P) = 100 kg (Max. Design load per cylinder)*3 = 300 Kg
R= (Payload (P) + Tare weight (S))*load factor is considered for design .This load is
uniformly distributed on the Floor area and primary structure. Load factor = 1.6 and 2
respectively for Forklift and Lifting condition.
3. Impact loads:
Horizontal impact = 0.25* R (for corner posts)
= 0.15* R (for other members, including top rail)
Vertical impact = 0.25* R
4. For Lifting with Pad eye, the load considered is 3*R.
Allowable stress = 0.85 * Yield stress of the material.
Max. Allowable deflection = L/250.

In lifting analysis:
1. Sling leg angle to vertical = 45 degree

2. Boundary conditions

Result and conclusion:

The Structure analysis of the Gas cylinder basket frame is checked in both Padeye and Forlift lifting
cases. The utilization ratio is checked for all the members and is kept less than one. Therefore, the
Stresses are within permissible limit. Deflection in beam members is checked and kept less than
maximum allowable deflection. Relative beam displacement table is attached in the reports below. The
Shear area at the forklift location and the fillet weld check at main connections are shown in the
appendix.

In lifting case: the location of pad eye is considered at a suitable distance, so that in case of tilting or
shifting of cog of the container, the container remains intact while lifting. Also, the shackles are attached
at the top of the basket, thereby keeping the c.g. of the basket below the lifting points.

The Pad eye and the Lifting sets are designed as per DNV 2.7-1 and EN 13889, are shown in the
Appendix below.

4. Appendix 3: Lifting Eye Design

Resulting Sling Load (RSL) = 12 kN(+5% of sling force)

Material Grade = S 275 JR

Re = 275 N/sq.mm

Eye Dimensions:-

Bolt hole Diameter Dh = 20.0 mm

Outer Radius H = 40.0 mm

Pad Eye Thickness t = 16.0 mm

1) Tear out Stress

= 37.5 N/Sq.mm < Re Hence Safe.

2) Contact Stress

= 145.2 N/Sq.mm < Re Hence Safe.

5. Appendix 4: Lifting Set Design (Sling & Shackle)

Lifting set is included with Wire rope Sling & Shackle with forerunner. The design of
lifting set is done as per BS EN 12079 and DNV 2.7-1.

5.1) DESIGN OF WIREROPE SLING

Maximum Gross Mass (R) = 1050 kg

Number of Slings (n) = 4 No

Maximum Sling Angle (β) = 45 degree

Working Load Limit (WLLmin) = 7t (Table 8-1)

Check for 4-Leg wire rope Sling

Nominal size of sling = 18 mm

Nominal size of forerunner = 26 mm

Working Load Limit (WLL) = 7.8 t (Table E-4)

WLL > WLLmin Hence Safe

Hence use 18mm Wire rope Sling confirming to EN 13414-1, steel cored rope,
grade 1770.

5.2) DESIGN OF SHACKLE

Working Load Limit (WLLmin) = 7t (Table 8-1)

Min. Shackle Working Load (WLL) = 3.0 t

Standard Shackle Working Load (WLL) = 3.25 t

Hence, use the Standard Shackle of 3.25 t capacity confirming to EN 13889.

Clearance between shackle pin and pin hole diameter should not exceed 6% of
the nominal shackle pin diameter.

Assumed Plate Thickness for Design Tc 6 mm
Plate Area Area 412500 mm2
Load W=1.6*P 4800.00 N
Pressure on the plate P=W/Area 0.01164 N/mm2
Material of Construction S275 JR
Yield stress of Plate Sy 275 N/mm2
Density of plate Rho 7850 kg/m3
Modulus of Elasticity E 198000 N/mm2
Allowable stress of Plate Sb =0.8*Sy 220.0 N/mm2
Stress at the Center of Plate 20.1 N/mm2
Deflection at the center of the plate  0.5 mm
Permissible Maximum Deflection min ( Tc/2, b/360) 3.0 mm
Stress at the Center < Allowable Stress . And, Deflection at the Center of the Plate is less
than permissible. Hence, the selected plate thickness is safe.

7. Appendix 6: Shear area calculation and fillet

weld check

Shear Area in Forklift calculation

Lifting from fork pockets:
The fork length are usually 600 mm. Considering, length of shear = 600mm.
Thickness of forklift Pocket at the Top 6 mm
Min. Shear Area A 1200.00 mm2
Shear Force F=2.5*P 750.0 kg
7358 N
Shear Stress in forklift τ=F/A 6.13 N/mm2
Permissible Shear Stress Sall=0.4*Sy 110 N/mm2
where,
Sy is the Yield stress of the Material
While forklift lifting, the shear stress is well within the permissible limit. Hence, Design is
OK.

Fillet weld check

Checking weld size between SHS 50x50x 5thk members around lifting area, in shear.
Allowable stress in shear welding =0.49.Sa Ss 80.9 N/mm2
where, Sa= Allowable stress of material in Tension
Max. Load on the Weld is at the lifting point. Considering the Load equal to the tension in the
steel wire rope.
W 1066.67 kg
10464.0 N
Fillet weld size 5 mm
Min. weld length I 200 mm
Total weld Area A 1000 mm2
Actual Weld stress Sr 10.46 N/mm2
Therefore, the selected weld size is well within the permissible limit and thus, 5 mm weld
will be sufficient at all the other member connections too.
