Temporary Jacking Point Reinforcement

This section presents the calculations on additional reinforcement requirements for the
temporary jacking points on the Portal Beam at Pier E4. The layout of the temporary jack
locations on top of the V-pier of the Cross Beam is shown in below figures.

The temporary jacking points (No. 1 and 2) are checked for bearing stress and anti-busrting
reinforcement against vertical loads (SLS and ULS).

There are two sets of temporary jacking points to cater for different loading scenarios:
- Temporary jacking points No.1 - For supporting the box girder deck during erecton (for adjustment)
- Temporary jacking points No.2 - For supporting the box girder deck during erection (e.g.
temporary supports during the deck erection)
- Both temporary jacking points No.1 and 2 will act simultaneously to support for future bearing replacement

The temporary jacking point sizes are provided to us by the Engineer and the Contractor.
- Temporary jacking points No.1 - 800mm x 800mm plan area
- Temporary jacking points No.2 - 800mm x 800mm plan area

Design Loads
The design loads on the temporary jacking points are provided to us by the Engineer and
the Contractor, the design loads are as follow:
- Temporary jacking points 1 8740 kN per jacking point (during erection) *
11799 kN per jacking point (ULS: 1.35 x Deck dead load)
- Temporary jacking points 2 8740 kN per jacking point (during erection) *
11799 kN per jacking point (ULS: 1.35 x Deck dead load)
- Temporary jacking points 1 & 2 23175 kN per 2 jacking points (during future bearing replacement, SLS)
30685 kN per 2 jacking points (during future bearing replacement, ULS)
(conservatively taken as max. ULS and SLS bearing load)

*Design load during erection is taken as the maximum deck load among all jacking points provided by
Meinhardt. (see table in appendix)

1) Bearing Vertical Load Check

The bearing pressure below the jacking is checked against the maximum allowable
stresses at SLS and ULS. A stress limit of 0.6*fck, as per J.102 of BS EN 1992-2-2005, is
checked against SLS and ULS applied load in accordance with BS EN1992-1-1:2005 7.2(2).

Anti-bursting reinforcement is checked to ensure the bursting force can be

resisted by the reinforcement. The bursting force and the reinforcement requirement is
calculated based on expression J.102 in BS EN1992-2:2005 Annex J.

At Temporary Jacking Locations

The location of the temporary jacking is unchanged from the conforming design
drawings of the substructure. The design loads at these temporary jacking location are as per
described earlier.
