BUTTERFLIES IN YOUR TUMMY PLAYTIME AT ALFIE’S

Liseberg is the greatest amusement park in
Scandinavia and is filled with exciting rides,
activities and music for all the family. During
autumn break and Halloween, Liseberg opens its
gates on a world of childish mischief, showers of
candy, disco dancing, carousels in Rabbit Land
and hair-raising houses of horror. Liseberg’s
popular Christmas market opens for the

WAVE TO A SHARK
The enormous Universeum Science Centre
near Korsvägen is a must for families with kids.
Covering seven floors, this is the place to see
exotic animals, explore the rainforest, watch the
sharks feeding in the giant aquarium and try out
fun experiments.

The old seed shop at the Garden Society of Goth-
enburg (Trädgårdsföreningen) has been trans-
formed into Alfie Atkins’ Cultural Centre (Alfons
Åbergs Kulturhus). The setting and the activities
are based on the books by Gunilla Bergström, in-
cluding theatre and storytelling sessions. There
is also a café here.

CLIMB ON A WHALE
Plikta is a large playground in Slottsskogen city
park that appeals to children of all ages. There
are lots of cool things to do, including a 15-metre-
long whale you can climb on. There is also an
outdoor gym, boules pitch, table tennis table and
picnic area. And don’t miss the Children’s Zoo,
feeding time for the penguins and the seal pond.

DISCOVER GOTHENBURG
Göteborg City Museum has a special section
for younger children, where they can play and
explore the city by climbing a tower block or
taking a tram ride. It’s ideal for children up to
age 5, but older children are also welcome. The
heritage exhibits at the City Museum include the
only Viking ship in Sweden that is permanently
on display.

TRY OUT THE COCKPIT
An underground aviation experience centre in
one of the Cold War’s top-secret defence facil-
ities, which now traces the history and develop-
ment of aviation. Test your skills in a flight simu-
lator, take a seat in a cockpit, be winched up by a
rescue helicopter or check out the spy exhibits.

PILOT A SHIP INTO HARBOUR
Learn all about the sea, the people who worked
on it and maritime life, at the Maritime Museum
and Aquarium at Stigberget. Older kids can
tackle the challenge of a ship simulator, while
younger kids can get to know the creatures of the
sea in the petting tank or burn off some energy in
the Knattegatt playroom. Closed for renovation in

Delve deep into maritime history and old ships

EXPLORE THE WORLD AT LARGE
The Museum of World Culture (Världskulturmuseet)
near Korsvägen always has fascinating exhibitions
covering topical issues around the world.
Earthlings (Jordlingar) is intended especially for the
little ones. Saturdays are often especially suitable
for families with children, with a variety of fun events
on the programme.

GET THE ADRENALIN FLOWING
The Action Park is a dream for skateboarders,
BMXers and inline skaters of all ages.
This concrete landscape lies behind the
Bergakungen cinema, just a stone’s throw from
Liseberg amusement park and the Universeum
Science Centre. The park is fully landscaped and
covers a massive 1,980 square metres.
TIME TO PLAY IN A GREEN SETTING
The Garden Society of Gothenburg (Trädgårdsför-
eningen) has its own playground, with clamber
nets, swings and slides set in leafy surroundings.
Younger and older kids can play here while you
admire the beautiful flower displays or enjoy
coffee and a bite to eat at Rosenkaféet or Café
Grindstugan.

FÄRJENÄSPARKEN ANGEREDS STADSPARK

One of the largest playgrounds on Hisingen,
featuring clamber nets, spinning cups, teepees
and animal sculptures. The skateboard park and
basketball pitch are sure to appeal to older kids.
And when you are gasping for a cup of coffee,
Färjenäs Café, an old workers’ café, is close
at hand.
POSITIVPARKEN
Parkour installation, trampolines, music games
for slightly older kids and a farmyard-themed
playground for the young ones. Positivet in Västra
Frölunda is a supervised park where the staff ar-
range activities and loan out equipment. You can
get a coffee here and there are good facilities for
barbecuing and picnicking. There is also a beach
volleyball pitch nearby.
A park where the colours, designs and play
equipment are inspired by the circus.
There are slides, climbing ropes, distorting mir-
rors, trampolines, carousels and giant swings
to amuse mini-acrobats and kids eager to play.
There are water games in summer, but otherwise
you can always splash about in the nearby swim-
ming pool.
EXERCISPARKEN
Adventure golf, street basketball and beach
volleyball are just a sample of what’s on offer in
Exercisparken in the southern corner of Heden,
at the junction of Engelbrektsgatan and Södra
vägen. Ideally located for combining with a visit to
Liseberg amusement park, Universeum Science
Centre or the Museum of World Culture.

in Scandinavia, kayaking in the canal or try your fishing luck at over
50 lakes close to the city. Set out on a journey of discovery and
experience green Gothenburg for yourself!

PARKS AND WALKS FOR YOUNG AND OLD
Gothenburg’s parks have something for everyone,
whether you are looking for a wilderness walk close
to the city or just want to enjoy a coffee in a green
space.
The fine old Garden Society of Gothenburg is
situated in the heart of Gothenburg. You can admire
the beautiful flowerbeds and get a coffee in one of
the park’s cafés. There are wonderful green spaces
and a great playground for the kids.
Another leafy spot that is definitely worth a visit is
Slottsskogen city park, Gothenburg’s green oasis
right in the city. You can say hello to the moose, seals
and penguins in the zoo, and the kids can get close to
THAN JUST PRETTY PLANTS
The tranquil Japanese Glade in northern Europe’s
biggest botanical garden is a great place to gather
your thoughts. Afterwards you can explore the many
other green spaces – ideal for kids with energy to
burn. If you need to restore your own energy levels,
the restaurant in the garden is open every day.
Next to the botanical garden is Änggårdsbergen
nature reserve, a wilderness park in the middle of
Gothenburg. Änggårdsbergen is an ideal place for
a day’s walk, but there are also wind shelters if you
want to stay longer.
COFFEE WITH A VIEW, IN HAGA
You don’t need to head for the trails to enjoy beautiful
views here. You can start with a walk along pictur-
esque Haga Nygata and buy a giant cinnamon bun
from Café Husaren. Then head up the steps to the old
fortress of Skansen Kronan to enjoy your bun and the
fantastic view over Gothenburg. This is a favourite
whatever your age.

BOATS, SWIMMING AND SAUNA ALONG THE
RIVER GÖTA ÄLV
Walk along the river from the Göteborg Opera
(Göteborgsoperan) and you will come to Gothenburg
Maritime Experience Centre, the largest floating ship
museum in the world. This is a fascinating destination
for children and adults alike.
On the other side of the river are Frihamnen
harbour and Centenary Park (Jubileumsparken)*.
You can take a dip in the riverside pool and try out the
spectacular sauna.
SEE THE CITY FROM TWO WHEELS
One good way to get around in Gothenburg is to rent
a bike. Download the Gothenburg Guides mobile app
to get a choice of fascinating tours to follow, with
your very own guide in your pocket.
BRAVE THE WAVES AND TRY YOUR FISHING LUCK
Just a short tram ride takes you to the rugged coast
line and sheltered inland lakes where you can
sunbathe or swim.
If you feel adventurous you can try paddleboarding or
kayaking and explore the city from the water. There
are paddling tours from Kungsportsplatsen, Lilla
Bommen and other locations.
You can certainly also sample the catch from local
waters as well. Book a sea fishing tour or buy a yel-
low permit (Gula kortet), which lets you fish in over
50 lakes in the Gothenburg region.
SEE FASCINATING ART IN GREEN SPACES
All around Gothenburg you can now discover Land
Art installations by artists from Sweden and abroad.
Land Art is a form of art that uses natural materi-
als to create installations that are inspired by the
landscape in which they stand.
In Positivparken in Frölunda you can now explore
a path – and interactive game – called Hjärtats väg
(Way of the Heart) and in summer 2018 the exercise
yard at the former Härlanda Prison will be filled with
flowering lilies.
The Land Art installations have been created to
make Gothenburg even greener and grander in time
for the city’s 400th anniversary in 2021. Read more

Liseberg amusement park, the Universeum Science
Centre, the Museum of World Culture and the
Swedish Exhibition & Congress Centre make sure
that there is always something going on.

relationship with the delicacies the sea provides.The
building was completed in 1874 to a design by the
city architect, Viktor von Gegerfelt.
GOT MORE TIME? TAKE A DETOUR.
Take the Älvsnabben harbour ferry from Lilla
Bommen Eriksberg. See the river Göta Älv
from the top deck and leave the ferry in the former
shipyard area of Eriksberg, where you can see the
Swedish Ship Götheborg, the landmark gantry crane
and enjoy the view towards Älvsborgsbron bridge.

Take a deep breath of fresh sea
air. The coast and islands around
Gothenburg are a unique setting
where the craggy shore meets leafy
nature. You will find cosy fishing
communities and fantastic gour-
met experiences here.

The islands of the archipelago are close

enough to visit for the day, but still far enough
away to have a totally different tempo to the
city. The southern half of the archipelago
is car-free. The only traffic you will see are
flatbed mopeds, bikes and the occasional
wheelbarrow. This is a relaxing setting and the
frequent ferry service from Saltholmen makes
it easy to get around. You can get to the north-
ern archipelago by car or bus, and explore a
mix of large and small islands. Several of the
islands are linked by bridges after you take the
ferry from Lilla Varholmen to Hönö.

Paddan canal boats, the Stinsen train and the hop-

Maritime Experience Centre to the Volvo Museum

VEGETARIAN & VEGAN
Gothenburg is a great destination for those who want
to sample vegetarian cuisine. Many restaurants in the
city are wholeheartedly committed to fully vegetarian
or vegan menus. The Folkteatern theatre restaurant,
Folk, is one of the most exciting in town, and a must
for anyone who likes the combination of vegetarian
dishes and organically produced wines. Visitors to
Liseberg can also eat at the Green Room – the first
totally vegetarian restaurant in the amusement
park – and the Majorna district offers both the vegan
Blackbird and vegetarian Syster Marmelad. Another

If you have young children it can sometimes be

the little ones will feel at home. Köttbullekällaren

Night may be falling, but the day is far from over. Nightlife in Gothenburg
takes different forms in different parts of the city – around Järntorget
square there is an alternative night scene centering on culture and beer
hangouts, while the main boulevard, Avenyn, is lined with large clubs and
the inner city offers a welcome mix of bars and good dance floors.

AROUND JÄRNTORGET SQUARE VASASTAN

Andra Långgatan is dotted with pubs and forms the
hub of the alternative night scene, which is often
more relaxed and easier on the pocket. You’ll find a
selection of pubs and indie bars along this street, such
as The Rover and Café Publik. Just a stone’s throw
from here, in the basement of Hagabion cinema,
is Bar Kino, which in summer has the friendliest
terrace bar in the district. On Första Långgatan street
is Haket, an LGBT-friendly favourite among fans
of beer and partying, and on Tredje Långgatan we
recommend a visit to Auktionsverket, a collection
of restaurants in one of the finest buildings in
the neighbourhood. When you just have to dance,
Pustervik in Järntorget square is the perfect choice,
where you can often see famous and not-so-famous

The central area within the Moat (Vallgraven) is

Crafts, and at the other is the School of Business,
Economics and Law, and one of the University of

to students celebrating exam successes. Jazzhuset,
in the heart of Vasastan, has been voted one of pop
history’s most important sites and has been a magnet
for pop fans and indie lovers for decades. Closer to the
