INTRODUCTION

Candle making business has existed for hundreds of years. Until today, the

demand for candles is still very much valuable in several places around the globe. In

addition to candles, it is growing as a primary category in the home décor industry,

consumers have an interest in trends like aromatherapy and enhancing their houses with

home scents. (Entre-Pinoys, 2015)

As a future entrepreneur, I came up with an helpful idea about the concept of my

candle. I will create a candle into a mosquito repellant using natural-based ingredients

and with a touch of lemon grass essential oil. The use of natural products poses an

alternative method of control and/or eradication of disease-carrying mosquitoes. It has

been customarily considered to be one of the safest ways of controlling pests. To find

effective and affordable ways to control the mosquito and prevent the spread of dengue,

there are several plants that have been tested and proven as the organic alternative for

chemical-based mosquito repellants.

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), sometimes called lemon grass or citronella,

is a tall grass-like ingredient commonly used in Southeast Asian countries. Lemongrass

plant and lemongrass essential oil are also used for medicinal purposes, some of which

are supported by scientific evidence. It is used as a natural insect repellent and helps

in preventing the occurrence of insect-borne diseases such as malaria, and the most

commonly known Dengue Virus.

Candles have been round for centuries, they typically use it as the main source of light

necessity for giving off light but as a luxury and décor for home. We are now dependent

with the new inventions of the technology today; electricity is the main source that gives

light in every home.

Candles are one of mankind’s earliest inventions. It has two main components; the

wax (the fuel) and the wick (the pillar to lit). The word “candle” has a luminous origin,

from the Latin word “candere”, meaning to shine. There are many cultural traditions that

resembles the candles, for commemoration, special celebrations and ritual purposes.

The earliest candle inventors are the Egyptians, they used rush lights or torches

made by “soaking pithy core reeds” in melted animal fat, but it has no wick. The second

inventors are the Chinese, they used “whale fats” that are wrapped with papers and

burned. Third are the Indians they used “cinnamon fruit” where it is boiled that rendered

wax, they typically used it for temples. Then finally, the candle inventor that resembles

the structure of candles as of this day, the Romans. They are generally credited with

developing the concept of wicked candle. Romans used tallow or sheep or cow’s fat as

wax. In the 19th century was a defining time of the candles for industrialization. The first

patented candle making machines were introduced by James Morgan.

Candles has a depth history, until now we use candle not has the main source of

light but the secondary source of light if there is no electricity. Candles nowadays serves

as a décor and ritual instruments that makes the occasion more special.

Aroma Candle making is a relatively new but interesting business because of the growing

demand for aromatic candles. It is advisable to engage in this business amid the

promising prospects of this industry in the local and export markets.

Candle making is one of the manufacturing businesses present in the world of

market. Manufacturing refers to a large scale production of goods or the process of

converting raw materials, parts and components into finished merchandise using manual

labor or using machineries.

Candles call to mind the ancient or traditional source of household lighting that, in

current times, no longer hold water. Older candles were made of tubes that were filled

with oil or animal fat wherein wicks, that were made of cloth, provided the material for

lighting candle with fire. Candles were mainstays in altars, during regular church rites and

also during fiestas, when masses were held to celebrate the occasion. There was a great

demand for candles especially if there is no electricity. In the course of time, candles

become in demand for varied purposes aside from its traditional usage as a source of

light. Candles became available in varied shapes and sizes, including the now popular

and scintillating aroma candles. Slowly, candle making has become a thriving industry

and one can observe the mushrooming of candle shops selling ready-to-make candles,

molds, wax, wick, essential oils and other requirements of the enterprise. It was in 1997

when the demand for aroma candles in the Philippines increased. Normally, there is a

low demand for this product during the months of January and February. It picks up soon

during the month of March, when candles exhibit flourish. Export orders begin to increase

during the months of April and May. But the peak season falls during the celebration of
two Christian events – All Saints Day also known as “Todos Los Santos” and the

Christmas season. In the local market, in terms of business potentials, aroma candles

provide bigger profits. A single candle can rake in as much as a thousand pesos, or even

sold at higher prices.

Homemade Mosquito Repellant Candle is available in a glass molder or votive with

varieties of colors. The finished product can be bought through our store, the retail

stores. The aroma candle, a candle type that is currently in vogue, is usually 8-12

inches in height. It can serve as a collector’s item and is in demand for its therapeutic

effects.

not to damage the table in case of any dripping. Melted wax is very hot and could

cause scalding, be reminded of that.

2. Prepare the cooking woods and lit it, boiler and water for heating and boiling of

3. Prepare 2 pots for melting the wax. This process is done using double boiler

method as wax cannot be melted directly on heat. Since wax is hard to clean, use

an old pot that you never would again use for cooking food.

4. Boil water in the boiler

5. Fill the larger pot with water half way and place the smaller pot on top of it. Place

the wax in the smaller pot and place the pots on top of a stove on high heat until

the water boils.

6. Check the temperature of the melting wax by using a candy thermometer; it should

be at 140°F.

7. Heat stainless pouring pot with the wax above level of the boiler, gently stir it for a

smooth and fine result of its texture.

8. After the wax is melted, turn down the fire and set aside the melted wax for a

seconds.
Mixing and Molding of Candle:

1. After cooling the melted wax in a second, mix it with the selected essential oil

(extracted lemon grass or essential oil) and dye and gently stir it with the wooden

spoon.

2. Cut the wicks down to size, then pour it with a small amount of melted wax as the

glue to the bottom and inside the candle molder.

3. Pour the mixed wax in the molder. Pour quickly and evenly the melted wax to

prevent lumps.

4. Hold the wicks with chopstick or pencil to make it perfectly at center.

of the target market, creating a product that satisfies their needs, offers it in an affordable

price, make it feasible and viable and promote this product for the common good.

(Belch,1995).

Homemade Mosquito Repellant Candle aims to internalize a successful marketing

strategy and serve as a strength to entice the expected customer’s needs and wants. A

candle business also needs to be developed to ensure that it can be easily found at the

onset of operations. According to Entre-Pinoys,2015, a candle shop entrepreneurs source

highly visible retail locations that can be seen by thousands if not tens of thousands of

people on a daily basis. This will ensure the people are familiar with the location when

they need candles or small gifts.

The researcher will integrate the concept of Marketing Mix by E. Jerome McCarthy

to the operation of candle business and gain sustainable competitive advantage in the

market. This will influence buyer’s decision and responses about the introduced product.

It is a mapping on the different consumer preferences that guides the researcher to have

a successful marketing strategy. Marketing mix consist of the four P’s: The Product,
