Maxwell Design Creation
• In Project manager window RMB on Setup1  Create Maxwell Design…
• Create both the 2D and the 3D Model

Maxwell 2D Design Inspection
• Independently from 2D or 3D, the settings are mostly identical
– Expand the tree for the 2D design and scroll it from up to down to inspect the settings
– Double click on MotionSetup1 and verify the speed is constant at 1000 rpm,
starting position is -10 deg and motion type is set to Rotation
– Inspect Boundaries: VectorPotential1 should be set on the external stator
side, while Master and Slave are set on the two cut sides.
– Slave must be Bs = -Bm

Master

Maxwell 2D Design Inspection
– Double click on PhaseA, PhaseB and PhaseC Windings and verify the sources are set to External
and conductors to Stranded
– The winding selection highlights the belonging conductors

Analysis Results and comments
• The results are in agreement each other, taking into account the two different
calculation methods (analytical for RMxprt, FEM for Maxwell)
• Main apparent discrepancy are the winding losses: 4.6 kW in RMxprt (where the
losses are calculated on 30 mW winding resistance), 2.6 kW in Maxwell 2D (the
winding resistance is only about 17 mW).
• That discrepancy is only apparent: in fact applying a scaling factor 30/17 to the
Maxwell losses we get 2.6 kW*30/17 = 4.59 kW, i.e. the RMxprt result.
• The winding losses calculated with Maxwell 2D are 4.1 kW, near to RMxprt
calculated value. Also the output mechanical power comparison shows good
agreement: 17.4 kW for RMxprt and 18.1 kW for Maxwell 3D.
• The huge discrepancy in losses between 2D and 3D model is due to the fact that the
depth of the machine is small compared to diameter. This causes the end-winding
contribution to be important and not negligible.
