1 Introduction

1.1 Purpose
This document defines the service procedures for the Salient Contrast Injector.

1.2 Caution
Salient service must only be performed by Imaxeon authorized service personnel.
The information in this manual is COPYRIGHT protected and must not be copied or redistributed without
the express permission of Imaxeon.
The Salient Contrast Injector, when used in conjunction with the ZY6320 syringe, is designed to deliver xray
contrast media in a controlled and safe manner, taking into account variations that occur in the injection
path.
X-ray contrast media is injected into the venous system of patients undergoing CT and other X-ray
examinations, to enhance the display of blood vessels and certain organ functions. In most cases the
contrast has little effect on patients, however if injected incorrectly could be very dangerous and therefore
it is our responsibility to ensure the injection system is operating correctly at all times.
As the contrast is diluted, absorbed and excreted by the body in a matter of minutes, coordinating the
injection with start of scanning – to take full advantage of the enhancement, becomes critical. Contrast
viscosity reduces when it is warmed, which becomes a factor in patient comfort and the amount of pressure
required to deliver the appropriate flow rate.
Many elderly patients have vascular disease and their veins may not accommodate an injection of contrast
at high flow rates. Should the needle dislodge or the vein becomes damaged during the injection, contrast
will be forced into surrounding tissue and a painful injury called extravasation will result. The Salient has no
means of detecting extravasation and cannot prevent the resulting injury to the patient.

1.3 Patient Safety

Contrast media is electrically conductive and when injected compromises the patient’s epidermal insulation.
For this reason, taking every precaution available with the use of Salient is good practice.
Battery operation increases electrical safety for the patient, and it is recommended where practical.
The Salient requires a protective earth connection (electrical grounding) from the mains power as per the
requirements of IEC60601-1: Ed 3.0 when used to inject while connected to the mains supply. This is not
necessary when operating on the internal battery. If the integrity of the mains earth connection cannot be
verified, as a precaution instruct the operator to disconnect mains power before attempting a patient
injection. The same precaution applies to the use of alternative power cords and extension cords.
The Salient is resistant to liquid ingress however in the unlikely event of fluid spilling onto the unit disconnect
the mains power at the wall immediately. Clean up with a damp cloth. If it is suspected fluid may have
entered the Salient, do not re-connect mains power until the unit has been checked thoroughly inside.
As with most electrical equipment, the Salient is not suitable for operation in the presence of flammable
anaesthetics.
The Salient may malfunction or fail to operate when exposed to high magnetic fields. Do not use radio
transmitters, mobile phones or devices generating electrostatic discharge in the vicinity of the Salient. Under
no circumstances, should the Salient be used within the MRI suite as ferrous metals have been used in the
construction.

1.6 Initiating Warranty Period
The initial power up screen is shown below.

Press the Activate Warranty Now button and the date will be recorded in the system as the date of
installation for the warranty period. In 12 months time, an annual service reminder message will appear
briefly as a prompt to have the system checked by an authorized Imaxeon Service Agent.

1.7 Upgrades and Modifications

As the Salient design evolves, various hardware and software improvements will be developed. Authorized
service personnel will have access to Imaxeon Service Bulletins and Instructions explaining these
improvements in detail. Where increased performance or additional features are part of the improvement,
this would in most cases be a chargeable option. At Imaxeon, we often include these options free of charge
in premium service offerings with direct end users. Refer to the Imaxeon for more information.

1.8 Manufacturer’s Warranty

The Salient system is guaranteed against defects in materials or workmanship occurring under normal use
and due care for a period of 12 months from date of installation or for a maximum period of 18 months from
the date of shipment from Imaxeon. Should a fault occur - the Salient will need to be repaired by an
authorized Imaxeon Service Agent, where the required parts, travel or labour will be free of charge for the
warranty period. Be aware, unauthorized repairs could void the remaining warranty on the Salient system.

1.9 Identifying System Serial Number

The Salient system serial number is located on the compliance label at the rear of the pedestal.

9 of 44
Salient Service Manual REF : SM040001-18
Do not confuse the Salient system serial number with the head serial number as shown. The head serial
number includes the prefix S (for single) or D (for dual) head.

2.5 Performance Verification

Failure to meet performance requirements detailed in this section indicates the Salient will need to be
calibrated as per the Calibration Procedures in Section 3.

2.5.1 Delivered Volume and Flow Rate Accuracy

1) Install a new syringe and fill with water.
2) Attach the pressure gauge assembly to the syringe.
3) Purge all air from the syringe and pressure gauge assembly. 4) Enter the following parameters:
Flow rate = 5ml/s
Volume = 100ml
Pressure = 225psi.
5) Purge the syringe until 120ml volume remaining is displayed on the screen.

6) ARM the Salient and tilt the head to the down position.
7) Partially close the restriction valve.
8) Press the inject switch on the screen or the remote control to start the injection.
9) While monitoring the indicated pressure on the gauge, adjust the restriction valve to achieve a pressure
of approximately 100psi.
The following conditions shall be met:

The delivered contrast volume displayed on the screen (can be verified 100ml ± 2ml
against a measuring cylinder when available)

The actual duration time displayed on the screen (can be verified against 20 ± 0.5s
a stop watch when available)

The indicated pressure displayed on the screen during the injection shall ± 50psi of the pressure gauge
be within reading during the injection

12 of 44
Salient Service Manual REF : SM040001-18

2.5.2 Flow Reduced Function

Refill the syringe with water and purge all air.
Enter the following parameters.
Flow Rate = 2.5ml/s
Volume = 100ml
Pressure = 100psi.
During this injection, adjust the variable restrictor carefully to cause the injector into pressure limiting or
Flow Reduced mode. This mode can be identified by the colour of the flashing indicators changing from
green to orange. The indicated pressure on the screen during the injection should be approximately 100psi
and the peak pressure on the review screen should be no more than 120psi.
This confirms correct flow reduced function.

2.5.3 Plunger Sensor and Zero Volume Position

The plunger sensor is an infrared device mounted in the side of the piston disk to detect the lower edge of
the syringe plunger.

Plunger
Sensor

To confirm correct alignment, retract the piston fully and install a new syringe with the fill screen displayed.
Press the engage button, the injector should detect the new syringe and automatically purge the syringe of
air. When fully purged, check the position of the syringe plunger is at the 0ml position. There should be no
remaining volume, nor should the syringe plunger be pushed hard against the end of the syringe barrel.
This confirms correct plunger sensor and zero volume position alignment. Note the automatic purge feature
is disabled when systems are configured for pre-filled syringe adapters.

Refer to both 3.5 Zero Volume Calibration and 3.7 Plunger Detect Threshold should there be any issues
detecting a new syringe and purging to the zero volume position.

2.6 Electrical Safety

Perform electrical safety testing as per International or Country requirements. Alternatively, the following
general requirements based on EN60601-1: Ed 3.0 can be used as a guide.

1) Resistance of detachable power cord shall be less than 0.2Ω.

2) Protective earth resistance from power inlet to chassis earth stud shall be less the 0.1Ω.
3) Insulation resistance from short-circuit active and neutral pins to the earth pin on the mains plug shall
be greater than 1.0MΩ.
4) Insulation resistance from short-circuit active and neutral pins on the mains plug to exposed conductive
parts of the injector shall be greater than 1.0MΩ.

13 of 44
Salient Service Manual REF : SM040001-18

Select Syringe Adapter

100ml or 150ml

When pre-filled syringe adapters are used, the adapters and therefore the contrast are uniquely configured
for the right hand side of the injector head. The Zero Volume Calibration on the saline side uses a normal
syringe and follows the procedure described previously.

To complete Zero Volume Calibration for both Prefilled Syringe Adapters, you will need the DC030 (100ml)
and DC029 (150ml) adapters plus empty 100 and 150ml syringes. The empty syringes need to be the same
syringe type or brand being used by the customer for the most accurate Zero Volume Calibration. This is
due to the variations in syringe length between the various brands of prefilled syringes, which can then
result in the syringe volume displayed on the Salient being different to the volume determined by the syringe
volume markings. Be aware, the syringe volume markings may not be accurate and should only be used
as a general guide to syringe volume.

1) Exit service mode, install the 100ml adapter and an empty 100ml syringe.
2) Fully purge the syringe to the current 0ml volume position.
3) Re-enter service mode and select the Zero Volume Cal option to display the screen above.
4) Move the piston forward so the seal can be seen just touching the end of the syringe barrel.
5) Press the save button when satisfied with the zero volume position.
6) Repeat steps 6 to 10 with the 150ml adapter installed and an empty 150ml syringe.

There are two similar methods of calibrating the Plunger Detect Threshold, manually using either a ZY6320
syringe or a Prefilled Syringe Adapter and automated when using the pre-aligned Sensor Calibration Fixture
MDMP021.
1) Exit service mode and on the fill screen, move the piston forward until the clear piston disk is just below
the white plunger body. Focus on the black sensor within the piston disk.
2) Re-enter service mode and select the Plunger Cal option to display the screen above.
3) Advance the piston by pushing on the up arrow until the sensor is half covered by the plunger body.

4) For Prefilled Syringe Adapters, advance the piston until the carriage flag half covers the sensor. This
is shown in the picture above.
5) When using the Sensor Calibration Fixture MDMP021, simply place the fixture on the end of the
pusher and the sensor will be half covered without need of alignment as in step 3.
6) With the sensor half covered, press the SET button to store the new calibration threshold.
7) The sensor reading (displayed as hexadecimal) should change as the sensor enters the plunger body
and values of FFFF or 0000 indicates a sensor problem.

3.13 Backstop Mode Selector

Backstop mode is used with Salient Dual systems to enable an algorithm that reduces back-flushing
from the tubing of one syringe to the other. It does this by pushing slightly on the saline syringe as the
contrast starts, to prevent contrast flowing into the saline. This means that at the beginning of an
injection you will see the saline syringe move. The backstop mode is designed as a cost effective
alternative to one way valves.

3.14 ImaxiFlow
ImaxiFlow is a feature available on Salient Dual systems. Protocols can be created that allow
simultaneous flow of both contrast and saline. To enable the ImaxiFlow feature, an alphanumeric
activation key must be obtained from Imaxeon.

7.1 PA0400 or PA0417: Main Board

The main board controls the system and consists of the following subsystems. New main board PA0417 is
compatible with both Salient and Vistron Plus.

7.1.1 Microcontroller
The main processor in the Salient is an SH 2A Renesas processor, containing dual 3 phase motor
controllers and multiple A/D channels used for position measuring.

7.1.2 LCD Controller

The LCD screen is driven by an SID13A05 Epson QVGA LCD controller.

7.1.3 Memory
Main memory is internal to the SH 2A. Additional FRAM contained in the RTC is used to store non-volatile
information such as calibration data, user routines, error log, current status, etc. The RTC itself is used to
time stamp system errors.

7.1.4 Power supply

There are 4 power supplies on the main board: 12V, 12Vmt, 5V, VCC 3.3V and 2.5V. A separate 28V motor
supply is directly supplied to the main board for the motor drive.

7.1.5 Motor position

Motor position is derived from the three phase analogue signals generated by the hall sensors contained
within the motors.

7.1.6 Motor Drive

Motor drive waveforms are fed to a standard IR2136S FET driver. Motor current is measured to calculate
syringe pressure.

7.1.7 Touch Screen Controller

The touch screen display is a Texas Instruments ADS7846N serial touch screen controller. This device is
also used to check the SH 2A internal ADC and the backup battery.

7.1.8 IR Decoder
The remote control employs a HT12D infrared decoder.

7.2 PA0401: Head Supply Board

The head supply board provides the main board with motor supply, 12V supply, communications, audio
output and the ON/OFF function. Information from the base board is routed through the head supply board.
The motor supply consists of a 200W DC to DC converter, generating 28.5V (+/- 0.5V) for the motor drive
circuit on the main board, with short circuit and thermal protection.
The 12V supply consists of a 2A DC to DC converter, with short circuit and thermal protection.
The communications section provides TTL-RS-422 conversion for COM0 and COM1.
The audio section is based on a LM4950 Audio Amp, with auto-shutdown mode, short circuit and thermal
protection.
The ON/OFF circuit is triggered by the POWER signal from the main board. The circuit has its own 5V
standby power regulator.

7.3 PA0402 or PA0415: Sensor Board

The sensor board has two functional circuits:
• The syringe sensor is a reflective infrared device, mounted at 90º such that the syringe plunger is
either detected or not detected. There can be no intermediate area when the syringe plunger is
close. The reflected signal is filtered and converted to a DC level via a two stage amplifier.
• The pushers retracted position is set by the home position sensor. This is also an infrared device,
interrupted by a flag mounted on the pusher.

42 of 44
Salient Service Manual REF : SM040001-18
7.4 PA0403 or PA0416: Back Board
The back board has three functional circuits:
• LED indicators to show motor movement, inject ready, injecting, warnings and alarm states.
• Infrared receivers for the remote control.
• Final drive encoder (FDE) to cross check the position count calculated from the motor position
sensors. The FDE consists of a hall sensor for each motor, which is triggered by a magnet on the
ball screw gearing.

7.5 PA0404: Base board

The base board has the following functional circuits:
• Mains power supply input.
• Directs the mains power supply output (24V) to the head supply board and the battery charging
circuit.
• Battery charging specific to continuous charging of SLA batteries.
• Isolate battery power while the unit is operated from mains power.
• Communications function for programming firmware and debug functions on the main board.
• Isolated footswitch interface.

7.6 PA0407 or PA0411: Remote Control Board

The remote control board provides remote inject and stop functionality to the Salient.
The high frequency infrared link used provides much higher immunity to CFL lighting, now commonly used
within the scanning rooms and a minimum 10 meter range.

7.7 PA0409: WizNet WiFi

This board is used to interface the WizFi210 wireless module and the future Wiz107SR Ethernet module to
the PA0404. The board automatically switches a serial connection from the PA0404 to the WizFi210 or the
future Wiz107SR determined by a control line from the Wiz107SR which detects an Ethernet connection.
