3. Safety Precautions

When operating this equipment, observe the precautions described below to ensure safety of the operator
and service personnel.

WARNING: 1. When you need to stop the system in an emergency, turn OFF the power
switch immediately.

2. Press the fluoroscopic/radiographic X-ray switch only when you want to

irradiate X-rays. If you press this switch inadvertently while the power is
ON, X-rays will be emitted resulting in unnecessary exposure of those
present in the X-ray room.

3. To prevent electric shock, be sure to turn OFF the equipment and facility
power switches and wait for at least one minute before touching internal
parts of the system to replace parts or connect measuring instruments.
Also be sure to turn OFF the facility power switches when handling the
breakers inside the remote control console. Be particularly careful with
the inverter unit of the remote control console because it has charged
parts in it. Be sure to check the residual voltage (against the
grounding) of the charged parts with a tester. Also, never change
measuring points or insert/extract connectors while the power is ON.

4. To ensure safety when they are used simultaneously, the following

systems should be electrically isolated and should not share the same
power supply: emergency resuscitation equipment, defibrillator,
electrocardiograph, cardiac monitor, contrast media injector,
telecommunication network system, endoscopy system, etc.

5. Do not connect external systems other than the systems shown in the
system circuit diagram. If such systems are connected, safety cannot
be ensured.

CAUTION: If a ground fault interrupter is used, an electrical short sensitivity current of

100 mA (protection level against an electric shock and fire due to an
electrical short circuit) is appropriate. In addition, in order to prevent
unnecessary operation due to high-frequency leakage currents that do not
lead to safety-related problems, use a ground fault interrupter that supports
high frequencies (inverter-support type).
If the existing ground fault interrupter and relay of the facility are used, check
them in advance to determine whether they support high frequencies. If not,
replace them with the recommended types.

7.3.2 Important points related to the connection of high-voltage cables

[A] Claymount high-voltage cables

The connection procedures that must be followed for Claymount high-voltage cables (HC-
150DC) at the time of installation or periodic maintenance are described below. (Steps (2)
to (4) are required at the time of installation only.)

(1) Clean the high-voltage cable plugs, the insides of the X-ray tube receptacles, and the
silicone plates thoroughly with absolute alcohol.

(2) Place ring nuts on the plugs. Polarity labels (+) and () should be attached on the
ring nuts in advance.

(3) Mount split flanges on the ring flange of the high-voltage cable and fix them with
screws.

(4) Apply silicone grease on a rubber gasket and place it over and around each plug (as
far as the ring flange).

(5) Apply silicone grease on both sides of the silicone plate and mount the silicone plate
on the tip of the plug. The purpose of application of silicone grease is to make the
surface of the silicone plate moist and smooth for better adherence. Apply a small
amount evenly. Do not apply the grease on the sides of the plug. Application of
grease to the sides could result in poor adherence of the silicone plate and in
deterioration of the withstand voltage.

(6) Insert and connect the plug (with the silicone plate mounted) into the receptacle and
tighten it with a ring nut.

(7) Tighten the setscrews of the ring nut securely. Use a hexagonal wrench for M3
headless setscrews (1.5 mm).

[B] Toshiba high-voltage cables

Use a silicone plate for installation, periodic maintenance, or replacement of Toshiba high-
voltage cables following the procedure described below. Also, replace the silicone plate
with a new one when the cable bushing is pulled out. In addition, stick a label indicating
the date of replacement and scheduled date of next replacement on the plate.

(1) Confirm that the tips of the terminals of the high-voltage cable are straight. The
appropriate clearance between the tips of the terminal is 0.6 mm. ( 0.6 mm)

(2) If the bushing of the high-voltage cable and the inside of its receptacle seem to be
dirty, clean them thoroughly using a clean cloth. In particular, the area around the
electrode at the tip must be thoroughly cleaned.

(3) Apply silicone compound on the silicone plate. A thin uniform layer should be applied
to prevent deterioration of the withstand voltage due to damage on the plate surface.

CAUTION: Do not apply silicone compound to areas other than the silicone plate.

(4) Mount the silicone plate on the bushing head. The surface with the rounded edge
(marked R) must face outward as shown in the figure below.

(5) Insert the bushing head (with the silicone plate mounted) into the receptacle and
connect and tighten it.

9.7 Adjustment for Radiography

9.7.1 Adjusting the radiographic tube voltage

Direct feedback control is performed for the radiographic tube voltage using the output from the
bleeder inside the high-voltage transformer. Therefore, if the radiographic tube voltage has
been adjusted before shipment, further adjustment is not required.

9.7.2 Adjusting the radiographic tube current

Although the radiographic tube current is detected by the sensor inside the HV TANK, direct
feedback control is impossible due to the heat inertia of the X-ray tube filament.

Therefore, preset control by automatic adjustment is performed. The adjustment procedure is

described below.

If the tube current does not rise within the specified time (0.8 s), perform preflash
adjustment referring to subsection 11.7.

45
No. 2C314-089E

CAUTION: x In order to protect the X-ray tube, provide an interval of at least three minutes
between large focus adjustment and small focus adjustment.

x In this unit, since smoothing of the high voltage is achieved using the stray
capacity of the high-voltage cable, if the high-voltage cable between the system
and the secondary tube current meter is too short, the current cannot be
measured correctly due to the large ripple. Therefore, when the tube current is
measured at the HV TANK side using the secondary tube current meter, a high-
voltage cable with a length of at least 15 m must be used to connect the system
to the secondary tube current meter.

[Radiographic tube current measurement procedure]

Prior to automatic adjustment, check whether X-ray exposure is possible by performing a single
X-ray exposure.

(1) Set S5 on PWB1 to the TEST position to select adjustment mode. (Refer to subsection
9.6.6.)

(2) To perform actual display of the tube voltage and tube current, select the GENE technique
and set bit 2 of 8-bit DIP switch S2 on PWB1 to ON.

(3) Select the large focus minimum tube current and set RkV = 60 kV and RTIME = 0.080 s.

(4) Set the AEC function to OFF.

(5) Press the X-ray button of the X-ray exposure handswitch.

(6) Confirm that X-ray exposure is possible and that the detected values of the X-ray tube
voltage and tube current are displayed on the X-ray control panel.

CAUTION: The X-ray tube voltage and tube current values may not be detected correctly if
the radiographic timer setting is 0.030 s or less.

(7) Set bit 1 of 8-bit DIP switch S2 on PWB1 to ON (automatic adjustment mode).

At this time, the message code "-2-" is displayed in the fluoroscopic cumulative time
display section of the X-ray control panel.

(8) In the GENE technique, select the tube current RmA for the large focus.

(9) Press and hold down the X-ray button of the handswitch.

(10) Since the X-ray high-voltage generator changes the filament current to automatically
generate X-rays and acquire data, hold down the X-ray button till automatic adjustment is
completed.

If the X-ray button is released before completion of automatic adjustment, the automatic
adjustment is invalid.

(11) When automatic adjustment is completed, the message code "H77" is displayed in the
fluoroscopic cumulative time display section of the X-ray control panel. When this
message code is displayed, the X-ray button can be released. If the message code
"H66" is displayed, adjustment was not completed successfully. In this case, repeat the
adjustment procedures.

46
No. 2C314-089E

(12) On the X-ray control panel, select the RmA for the small focus and perform steps (9) to
(11).

(13) Set bit 1 of 8-bit DIP switch S2 on PWB1 to OFF.

(14) Reboot the system by performing the reset operation.

The reset operation can be performed by operating CPU reset switch S3 or by pressing
the power ON switch.

[Check]

(15) Check the detected values at the following points by following the procedures described
in (1) to (6) above.

If the detected value is outside the adjustment accuracy range described in subsection
11.2, manually adjust the value at the concerned point by referring to the procedures
described in subsection 11.7

RkV : 50, 60, 90, 120 kV

RmA : All mA steps
RTIME : 0.080 s

(16) If the system has a second X-ray tube, repeat steps (1) to (15).

CAUTION: After adjustment is completed, perform all the required settings to return the
system back to normal mode from adjustment mode.

CAUTION: When fluoroscopy is to be performed, be sure to adjust the fluoroscopy tube

current by following the procedures described in subsection 9.8.1

47

(a) Determining the standard conditions

Place and pile acrylic plates (phantom) while shifting them by 1 cm each as shown
in the figure below and perform X-ray exposure under the following conditions.

Determine the total thickness of the acrylic phantoms when the film density at this
time is the density specified by the customer or 1.0

X-ray exposure conditions: 80 kV, 320 mA, 32 ms, acrylic phantom with a
thickness of approx. 20 cm
AEC OFF, raw film

X-RAY

Acrylic phantom

Density of 1.0 (or density specified by the customer) o Acrylic phantom thickness

Important points regarding adjustment

x If the X-ray tube voltage that can be used is limited or if the above tube current
cannot be output due to restrictions on the X-ray tube used in combination,
determine the standard conditions based on the actually used operating
conditions.

x When the thickness of the acrylic phantom is reduced by approximately 3 cm,

the X-ray transmission per unit time doubles.

x Although the obtained acrylic phantom thickness (W) differs depending on the
film/intensifying screen and the SID, the patient table corresponds to
approximately 14 cm to 18 cm.

(b) Checking the reference density

Set the backup timer to 100 ms or more and adjust the AEC detector sensitivity so
that the following conditions are satisfied.

X-ray exposure conditions: 80 kV, 320 mA, 32 ms, acrylic phantom thickness of
W cm

Important points regarding adjustment

x When the photomultiplier voltage is increased by approximately 1%, the

density drops by approximately -0.1.
x Use an oscilloscope to confirm that the integral waveform for PWB1 is
straight.
If the waveform is not straight (wavy etc., ), entry of external noise is
likely. Therefore, change the route of the signal cable of the detector
(particularly inside the cabinet).

51
No. 2C314-089E

(c) Checking the object thickness characteristics

Measure the object thickness characteristics for AEC at the following three points.
If they do not satisfy the standard, perform the following adjustment.

Tube voltage Tube current Acrylic phantom

Time (ms) Density Standard
(kV) (mA) thickness (cm)
80 (*) 320 (*) W-9 Approx. 5 ms Within the reference
density ±10%
18 (note 2) Approx. 250 ms
W+9

(*) If the X-ray tube voltage that can be used is limited or if the above tube current
cannot be output due to restrictions on the X-ray tube used in combination,
check the object thickness characteristics using the actual operating
conditions.

Note 1: The temporal characteristics from 5 ms up to 250 ms have been

confirmed for the above acrylic phantom thicknesses. If this range is
exceeded, change the acrylic phantom thickness.
Note 2: For chest radiography, change the reference acrylic phantom thickness
to 10 cm.

Long-time correction A 7 1 * * * 0 d Kltc d 200 ***

Important points regarding adjustment

x When the short-time correction value increases to 10, the exposure time
T reduces to approximately 1 ms.

x For long-time correction, ± correction is possible relative to a base value

of 100.
The relationship between the long-time correction value and the exposure
time T is as follows when 250-ms radiography is performed:
Tu (1 + 'Kltc/100) ms

x When the density is approximately 1.0, the time is nearly proportional to

the density.

x Since the density tends to drop noticeably at near 10 to 20 ms, note this
point when the short-time correction value is set to 40 or more.

Important points regarding adjustment

x For PTF spot radiography, setting is performed with no correction at the time of
shipment from the factory because the density is low due to subdivision.
Therefore, increase the voltage approximately 5 V at a time and perform the
required adjustment in the order of two-frame correction and then four-frame
correction.

9.8 Fluoroscopic Adjustment (SPOT/DR techniques)

When the unit is used as R/F system, fluoroscopic tube voltage adjustment is not required because
direct feedback control is performed using the bleeder output in the high-voltage transformer (as in
the case of radiography). However, it is necessary to adjust the fluoroscopic tube current.

9.8.1 Fluoroscopic tube current adjustment

Perform adjustment of fluoroscopic tube current according to the procedural flowchart shown
below.

[Flowchart of fluoroscopic tube current adjustment]

(12)(13) Termination of adjustment mode

[Fluoroscopic tube current adjustment procedure]

Prior to automatic adjustment, check whether X-ray exposure is possible by performing a single
X-ray exposure.

(1) Set S5 on PWB1 to the TEST position to select adjustment mode. (Refer to subsection
9.6.6.)

(2) Select the SPOT technique. To perform actual display of the tube voltage and tube
current, set bit 2 of 8-bit DIP switch S2 on PWB1 to ON.

(3) Set FkV = 60 kV and FmA = 0.5 mA.

(4) Set the ABC function to OFF.

(5) Press the fluoroscopy button or the fluoroscopy footswitch.

(6) The detected tube voltage and tube current values are displayed on the X-ray control
panel.

Since this step is performed to check whether X-ray exposure is possible, it is acceptable
when the detected values of the X-ray tube voltage and tube current are displayed on the
X-ray control panel.

56
No. 2C314-089E

(7) Set bit 1 of 8-bit DIP switch S2 on PWB1 to ON (automatic adjustment mode).

At this time, the message code "-2-" is displayed in the fluoroscopic cumulative time
display section of the X-ray control panel.

(8) Press and hold down the fluoroscopy button or the fluoroscopy footswitch.

(9) Since the X-ray high-voltage generator changes the filament current to automatically
acquire data, hold down the fluoroscopy button or the fluoroscopy footswitch till automatic
adjustment is completed.

If the fluoroscopy button or the fluoroscopy footswitch is released before completion of

automatic adjustment, the automatic adjustment is invalid.

(10) When automatic adjustment is completed, the message code "H77", indicating the
completion of adjustment, is displayed in the fluoroscopic cumulative time display section
of the X-ray control panel. When this message code is displayed, the fluoroscopy button
or the fluoroscopy footswitch can be released. If the message code "H66" is displayed,
adjustment was not completed successfully. In this case, repeat the adjustment
procedures.

(11) Since the fluoroscopic focus is fixed to small, the other focus sizes cannot be adjusted.

(12) Set bit 1 of 8-bit DIP switch S2 on PWB1 to OFF.

(13) Reboot the system by performing the reset operation.

The reset operation can be performed by operating CPU reset switch S3 or by pressing
the power ON switch.

[Check]

(14) Check the detected values at the following points by following the procedures described
in (1) to (5) above.

FkV : 50, 90, 120 kV

FmA : 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 mA

CAUTION: After adjustment is completed, perform all the required settings to return
the system back to normal mode from adjustment mode.

NOTE: If the small tube current (0.5 to 1.0 mA) cannot be adjusted, the preheating may
be too high.
Reduce the preheating by 0.100 mA for both the small focus and the large
focus, reset the system, and the perform automatic adjustment again.

CAUTION: If a bleeder is connected, the display on the mA meter <1> does not match
the detected value display <2>.

Therefore;

1. When automatic adjustment of the fluoroscopic tube current is to be

performed, do not connect a bleeder.

2. If connection of a bleeder cannot be avoided in fluoroscopic tube

current detected value display mode, use only the display on the mA
meter <1> (ignore the detected value displayed on the X-ray control
panel <2>).

Note: When the bleeder is removed, the detected RmA value approaches the value
displayed on the mA meter, but is approximately 5% higher.

CAUTION: Unlike the existing system, parallel connection using a free receptacle
(example: TUBE2) cannot be performed for the bleeder. Therefore,
connect the bleeder as shown in the figure above. In addition, in this unit
smoothing of the high voltage is achieved using the stray capacity of the
high-voltage cable. Therefore, if the high-voltage cable connecting
between the system and the secondary tube current meter is too short, the
current cannot be measured correctly due to the large ripple. When the
tube current is measured at the HV TANK side using the secondary tube
current meter, a high-voltage cable with a length of at least 15 m must be
used to connect between the system and the secondary tube current
meter. This cable is not required when measurement is performed at the
X-ray tube side.

9.8.2 Checking the fluoroscopic timer

(1) Set the fluoroscopy switch to ON.

(2) Confirm that a buzzer sounds when the time set using the fluoroscopic timer is reached
and that the buzzer stops when the switch on the X-ray control panel is pressed.

(3) Confirm that when the switch is pressed again, the fluoroscopic cumulative time
display is cleared.

(4) Confirm that the fluoroscopic cumulative time display is within the permissible fluoroscopic
cumulative time display error range referring to the adjustment accuracy list given in
subsection 11.2.

NOTE: If the switch is not pressed, continuous fluoroscopy is interrupted after 10

minutes.

9.8.3 ABC adjustment

When this unit is to be used for R/F systems, adjust the automatic brightness control (ABC)
function after completing adjustment for fluoroscopy.

ABC is classified into F-ABC, which uses an I.I. photo pickup detector, and video ABC, which
uses a video signal. When the MTV-100A is used in combination, use F-ABC to perform
adjustment.

The adjustment procedures are described below. Before performing ABC adjustment,
adjustment of the auto iris of the patient table must have been completed.

(1) Connect the video output signal of the TV camera to an oscilloscope and check the SYNC
level (approximately 0.3 V) and the pedestal (approximately 0.1 V) of the video signal.
(Oscilloscope range: 0.1 V/div, 2 ms/div)

Approximately 0.1 V (pedestal)

Approximately 0.3 V (SYNC)

(2) Place the acrylic phantom (thickness of 18 cm) on the tabletop.

(3) Set the SID (distance between the focus and the I.I. input surface) as follows.

(a) R/F table with over-table tube

Leave as is for fixed type systems. For FFD (distance between the focus and the
film) adjustable systems, set the FFD to 110 cm.

(4) Perform settings of the TV monitor.

80 kV, 2 mA

(6) Set the fluoroscopy switch to ON and adjust the setting (fluoroscopic iris) corresponding to
the fluoroscopic N mode at the X-ray diagnostic table to set the VS (video level) of the
video output signal as follows.

(a) R/F table with over-table tube

VS = Approximately 0.40 V

VS (video level)
Note: Including a pedestal of 0.1 V.

SYNC 0.3V

Oscilloscope range: 0.1 V/div, 2 ms/div

(b) Change the ABC level (BRIGHTNESS) and confirm that the brightness on the TV
monitor screen changes.

(7) Check fluoroscopy automatic mode in the following manner.

(a) Select fluoroscopy automatic mode (fluoroscopic ABC function ON), set ABC level
(BRIGHTNESS) to the middle level, and then set the fluoroscopy switch to ON.

(b) Adjust the photomultiplier voltage so that the VS (video level) of the video output
signal is approximately 0.45 V.

9.8.4 Adjusting the fluoroscopic dose limit

This subsection describes the procedures for adjusting the fluoroscopic dose limit.

(1) Position the measuring device according to the table type.

Position the X-ray tube and dose measuring probe so that they are as close to each other
as possible.

For systems in which the SID can be changed, move the X-ray tube as close to the I.I. as
possible.

For systems permitting the patient table to be moved vertically and laterally, move the X-
ray tube as close to the dose measuring probe as possible.

10. SECURING THE REMOTE CONTROL CONSOLE

After all the adjustment and test procedures described in section 9 are completed or if it is judged
that no further changes will made after cable routing (connection) is completed, secure the remote
control console.

10.1 Anti-Earthquake Securing of the Remote Control Console

If measures to prevent the remote control console from falling in an earthquake are required, take
the following actions.

(1) Anti-earthquake measure: Secure the remote control console using a band (or use an
equivalent method).

(2) Strength of the band: 980 N (100 kgf) or more (example: TAKIGEN band, product number
C-1997-3)

(3) Securing position: Wrap the band securely (there should be no looseness) around the
console at a height of between 400 and 600 mm above the floor and secure the band to a
wall, column, etc. at two or more locations.

(4) Strength of the band securing section (wall, column, etc.): 980 N (100 kgf) or more

11.7 Additional Information Related to Tube Current Adjustment

In addition to automatic adjustment, the tube current can be adjusted manually using the switches
on the PWB1.

(1) Preheating adjustment

Set the rotary switches to the tube current adjustment settings referring to the rotary switch
table given in subsection 11.1.

The preheating data of the tube and the focus setting in the X-ray control panel can be
adjusted.

CAUTION: The adjusted data becomes effective the next time the system is started up;
therefore, be sure to reset the system after adjusting the preheating data.

(2) Fluoroscopic tube current adjustment

Although adjustment can be completed by automatic adjustment, if manual adjustment is

required, set the rotary switches for tube current adjustment referring to the rotary switch
table given in subsection 11.1.

The fluoroscopic tube current adjustment points are listed below.

FkV : 50, 90, 120 kV

FmA : 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 mA

CAUTION: The fluoroscopic main heating data cannot be adjusted at points other than the
above.
The fluoroscopic main heating data is calculated by interpolation for points other
than the above. However, the adjustments become effective only next time the
system is started up. Therefore, be sure to reset the system after adjustment is
completed.

(3) Radiographic tube current adjustment

If the radiographic tube current is to be adjusted manually, set the rotary switches for tube
current adjustment referring to the rotary switch table given in subsection 11.1.

The heating data of the tube and the focus setting in the X-ray control panel can be
adjusted.

The radiographic tube current adjustment points are listed below.

RkV : 50, 60, 90, 120 kV

RmA : Each mA step

CAUTION: The radiographic main heating data cannot be adjusted at points other than the
above.
The radiographic main heating data is calculated by interpolation for points other
than the above.

(4) Preflash level adjustment

This adjustment is required only when the radiographic tube current does not rise within the
specified time.

Preflash is required to speed up heating of the X-ray tube filament and is performed after
the READY button is pressed but before main heating starts.

Preflash
Main heating

Heating level
Preheating

Time

READY "ON"

The preflash time for this unit is fixed and the amount of preflash is calculated using the
preflash coefficient. Therefore, preflash level adjustment is performed by changing the
preflash coefficient.

Preflash coefficient curves are generated using preflash coefficients at three points: the
maximum filament current point, the minimum filament current point, and the point halfway
between them (intermediate filament current point).

The three preflash coefficients PRF1, PRF2, and PRF3 are selected by the setting switch.

Tube current characteristics

Preflash coefficient
Tube current (mA)
PRF3 PRF

PRF

PRF2 PRF1

Minimum Intermediate Maximum

Filament current (A)

The method for identifying the point to be adjusted (PRF 1 to 3) is described below.

Plot the X-ray conditions for the preflash level to be adjusted on the tube current
characteristics curve. If the filament current at this time is close to the maximum point,
adjust PRF1. Similarly, adjust PRF2 or PRF3 if the filament current is close to the
intermediate point or the minimum point, respectively.

98
No. 2C314-089E

If none of the above three points is applicable and the filament current is between the
minimum point and the intermediate point, adjust both PRF3 and PRF2. Similarly, if the
filament current is between the intermediate point and the maximum point, adjust PRF2 and
PRF1.

CAUTION: If the preflash level is too low or high, increase or reduce PRF1, PRF2, and PRF3
equally. Then, adjust PRF3 if the tube current is small and PRF1 if the tube
current is large.
The preflash level must be adjusted separately for the large focus and the small
focus.
