8.3 Structures & Other Encumbrances
Identified structures and encroachments along the alignment shall be removed by the
contractor under instructions from the Engineer In-charge.
9.0 Pile Installation
9.1 Formation of Pile bores
Pile bores up to the specified depth shall be executed by rotary drilling method. The pile
location shall be marked on the ground using wooden peg, 15-20 cm long. The
impression of the boring tool is made on around the point and the rig is correctly aligned
to the impression. On aligning the rig, boring shall be carried out to the required depth
and then MS liner of suitable length shall be placed in the pit concentric to the pile point.
The liner is then pressed inside with the arrangements available in the rotary rig. Material
inside the casing liner shall be removed progressively by the rig with the auger or bucket
tool. Thereafter the rotary drilling rig shall continue by continues supply prepared
Polymer slurry of desired pH and specific gravity into the bore hole with the help of
pump which is connected to the Polymer tank. Polymer slurry added to ensure the
stability of bore hole. The drilling operation will continue till the desired founding level.
The muck removed from the bore shall be disposed away from the site at approved
dumping location identified jointly with DMRC.

strata duly anchored as per Codal provisions. All piles shall be cast-in-situ piles bored
by hydraulic rotary rig only.
9.3 Stabilizing the bore hole:
9.3.1Water supply
An appropriate supply of water/or water tank must always be available.
9.3.2Positive Head Pressure
A minimum of 3 meters of polymer slurry pressure head should always be maintained
above the water table.
9.3.3The mixing tank
The mixing tank shall be installed taking into consideration the slurry needs for constant
agitation. This can be achieved by dedicating a pump and compressed air system to the
mixing tank. It is recommended to use piston pumps in place of centrifugal pumps for
best results.
In order to allow faster hydration of the polymer, a metallic splash plate should be
welded directly underneath the flow of water directed into the tank and inclined
approximately 45 degrees.
If the water flow of the slurry’s agitation is insufficient versus the rate of addition of the
dry polymer granulate, the formation of inert agglomerates will occur, thus resulting in a
higher consumption than initially expected.
The capacity of the storage should be taken into consideration the excavation’s volume
and pretended production rates preferably exceeding it 1.5 times.
9.3.4Storage, Sedimentation tanks and slurry plant schematic
Storage of slurry can be made in tanks having adequate capacity.
It is recommended that sedimentation tank shall be open on top to allow an easy cleaning
and removal of sediments. The inclusion of two deflective plates will assure the
continuous flow of the slurry in a “cascade” like mode, increasing the speed of
sedimentation occurring between different compartments or sections. This design causes

a significant increase of the sedimentation process. The inlet valve shall be directed to the
top of the first deflective plate. Both valves should be placed at the same height from the
top of the deflective plates.
The installation of slurry plant must allow all operations to be carried out at the same
time Mixing, sending and receiving slurry without interfering with production rate.
The sedimentation tanks are extremely important in the returning slurry’s self – cleaning
process by sedimentation and must be incorporated in a slurry plant.
9.3.5Description and usage of polymer
• Synthetic dry granular biodegradable polymer should be mixed with water at an
initial rate of 1 kg per cubic meter, which may be increased or decreased as per
requirements at site to aid proper stabilization of bore.
• Before adding polymer, the water pH should be adjusted to 8 to 11. For a correct
adjustment of the water’s pH, it is advisable that the usage of Sodium Hydroxide or
Potassium Hydroxide in a concentration of 45 to 50% in a rate of 1 liter per M 3 of water. If
purchased in dry flakes the correct amount is 0.5 Kg per M3.
• With the initial recommended dosage and after previous treatment of the water’s
pH the viscosity will be between 60 to 70 seconds per liter (API Marsh Funnel). Based on
site experience , the slurry’s viscosity should always be maintained greater than 55
seconds for best results which may be identified and changed as per requirements at site.
Polymer maintains its properties through time provided that is not exposed to high
concentrations of chemical contaminants, such as calcium carbonates, magnesium,
calcium and chlorine amongst others.
• The values above were calculated considering the usage of an adequate mixing tank.
Whenever the usage of tanks is not possible, with direct mixing at the excavation, the
required dosage may be higher with no harm whatsoever to product’s best performance.

• It is recommended that whenever possible the mixing should be preferably done in

a proper mixing tank. However, depending on general circumstances such as lack of
space or soil conditions, it may be necessary to add polymer directly at the excavation.
The application this method has several advantages like increased slurry viscosity and an
overall stabilization of the formation helping to prevent fluid loss and improving the
slurry’s performance.
9.3.6Technical specification and key slurry properties to be monitored

Viscosity
The viscosity of polymer should be maintained 34-143 seconds per liter as per Outline
Construction specification clause 8.1.4. It is also recommended that the slurry’s viscosity
should always be maintained greater than 55 seconds for best results which may be
adjusted suitably for site conditions in order to stabilize the bore.
pH.
For best performance, pH should always be kept between 8 and 11. Under no
circumstances should the pH of the slurry be lower than 8 and higher than 11. If it exceeds
above 11 pH it may damage the molecular structure of polymer leading to harm
performance of polymer. Continuous monitoring of pH is extremely important since it is
slurry’s only protection against chemical or contaminants in general.
Specific weight or Density
The specific density in a slurry mix is 1.025 g/cc max.
Sand Content
Specification in sampling from the excavation is usually equal or inferior to 1.0%.
Sand content should be checked prior to placing the reinforcement cage or whenever
specified by project.

suitable for soil stabilization in cohesive and non-cohesive soils. The dosage may change as
per site requirements.
If the water of the soil has chemical contaminants it may be required add Sodium
Hydroxide or Potassium Hydroxide to precipitate salts in solution. Additional polymer
may also be required to add directly at the excavation assures soil stabilization.
The values above are calculated considering the usage of an adequate mixing tank and
positive displacement pumps. Direct mixing at the excavation is recommended for
viscosity adjustment in the slurry column while drilling. The mixing should preferably be
done in mixing tank. The polymer slurry is than pumped using a diaphragm/piston pump
to the excavated bored pile location.
• Pump out the water from top to the mixing tank, leaving the last 50 cm. Last 50 cm
water shall be disposed off.
• The sediments deposited in bottom shall be disposed off.
• If the water with the referred concentration is used without pre-treatment, polymer
consumption will be high.
• Upon concrete pouring to an excavation the slurry shall be retrieved passing
through a sedimentation tank. This prevents particles carrying to the storage tanks
or mixing tanks. Further it prevents the slurry cycle from contamination.
The polymer slurry circulation arrangement as shown at attached Figure-1.

finished concrete and dowel surface shall be left in a clean condition.

10. Environmental Impact

Synthetic polymer is biodegradable and non-pollutant or harmful to the environment.
There are several methods for treatment of polymer slurries after usage. The most
common is perhaps the treatment with Calcium Hypochlorite and Muriatic acid. The
treatment neutralizes the pH levels, eliminating the system, turning the slurry into
residual water. This procedure is applied only once at the end of the project, unless
otherwise users decides to re-use the slurry in another project or location.
The acid is used to neutralize alkaline ph.. Quantities to be applied vary from 3 to 5 liters
per M3 of slurry. The tanks must be agitated when this product is added.
The Calcium Hypochlorite is available in the market in granular form and different
concentrations. The ideal concentration for this process ranges 60-70 %. The quantities to
be used vary from 0.1-0.5 kg per M3 of slurry by adding the product directly to the slurry
after neutralizing the ph. The result is the transformation of the slurry in “residue water”.
The term “residue water” is used to best describe the sediment fines and soil particles
previously in suspension.
The product resultant from this treatment can be directly discharged without any danger
of contamination, to the environment of sewerage systems accordingly to local laws.

11.0 Tolerances
(a) Angular Deviation from vertical : 1.5% of vertical pile
(b) Piles should not deviate more than 75mm or D/6 whichever is less (75mm or D/10
which ever is more in Case of piles having diameter more than 600mm) from their
designed positions at the working level. In case of single pile under a column the
positional deviation should not be more than 50mm or D/6 whichever is less (100mm in
