Issue Description
Airbus has received complaints regarding 'NO BSCU DATA' CFDS messages and
consequently the impossibility to access the BITE through MCDU. This led to
several cases of EMM BSCU L4-1 and L4-5 removals.
This issue may affect the EMM BSCU standard L4-1 (PN E21327001), L4-5 (PN
E21327003) and L4-8 (PN E21327004).
The conventional BSCU Std 7 (PN C20216332292C) or 9 (PN C202163372D32)
or 9.1 (PN C202163382D32) or 10 (PN C202163392E34) are not affected.
Consequence
The consequence of this BSCU hardware phenomenon is 'NO BSCU 1 (2) DATA'
CFDS messages and the impossibility to access the BITE.
The BSCU Braking and Steering functions are not affected by this phenomenon.
Investigation Status
An impacted BSCU has been investigated. The message 'NO BSCU 1(2) DATA'
has been reproduced in laboratory and fully understood.
'NO BSCU 1(2) DATA' is triggered when one specific BSCU internal counter is set
to its maximum value, which corresponds to 11930 hours 27 minutes and 53
seconds of BSCU switched on with no ATEC Test in this period. The time counter
reaching its maximum value causes the partial loss of ARINC transmission (label
356) to the CFDS thus resulting in a 'NO BSCU 1(2) DATA' message coming from
CFDS.
Mitigation / Interim Plan
The counter can be reset if an ATEC Test is performed on the affected BSCU.
An on-aircraft maintenance tool was studied in order to provide the operators
with another temporary fix without removing the BSCU from the aircraft. The
maintenace tool consists in using a set of OBRM tool (On Board Replaceable
Module) to clear the affected 'NO BSCU 1(2) DATA'.
This interim solution has been validated and it is provided to the operators
through Airbus Inspection Service Bulletin (ISB) A320-32-1318 that has been
dispatched on 30 Aug. 2006. Messier Bugatti Service Letter Ref. F6137-32-3266
and the OIT SE 999.0002/06/CL dealing with this issue have been reviewed and
dispatched.
Messier Bugatti is committed to manage the availability of the maintenace tool
with the impacted operators.
Please note that the ATEC test or the use of OBRM tool as proposed by Messier
Bugatti are the only interim solutions available to temporarily fix this issue. The
upgrade from L4-5 to L4-8 BSCU standard (without an ATEC test being
performed) WILL NOT reset the BSCU counter.
Maintenance Information
It is to be highlighted that the operation using the OBRM tool will also erase the
BITE content. As a precaution, it is recommended to extract the BSCU BITE data
prior to execution of this operation.
In case the BSCU is removed further to 'NO BSCU 1(2) DATA' CFDS messages,
please clearly indicate on the Repair Order the reason. This will avoid the BSCU
to be considered NFF. Actually, the ATEC test will reset the counter but no failure
will be logged.
Repercussion on A/C Dispatch
The consequence of this BSCU hardware phenomenon is 'NO BSCU 1 (2) DATA'
CFDS messages in the PFR and the impossibility to access the BITE. The BSCU
Braking and Steering functions are not affected by this phenomenon and the
warnings are normally sent to the FWC (ECAM warning fully operational).
In case the CFDS message NO BSCU 1(2) DATA is shown to exist on the PFR and
there is neither Braking nor NWS system ECAM warnings nor log book entries
related to braking or steering systems, the aircraft can be dispatched to avoid an
AOG situation. However, Airbus would recommend the replacement of the BSCU
at the first opportunity to allow proper recovering of the BSCU BITE function thus
to allow proper operation of the link between the BSCU and the CFDIU.
Solution
A software correction has been introduced in EMM BSCU std L4-9B (PN
E21327006), which is available for the operators through Airbus SB A320-32-
1350 and Messier-Bugatti SB E21327-32-3302. The introduction of the BSCU Std
L4-9B (or BSCU pre EMM Std 10) allows to cancel the Airbus Inspection Service
Bulletin (ISB) A320-32-1318.
