CHECK LIST FOR DESIGN OF DAMPER SYSTEM FOR
GAS TURBINE EXHAUST GAS SYSTEM

1.0 SCOPE

This document lists out major items to be checked in regard to the design of damper
system for gas turbine exhaust gas system.

2.0 DESIGN CRITERIA

2.1 Obtain the gas turbine exhaust gas parameters (flow and temperature) at guarantee,
maximum and minimum ambient temperature for base load and peak load conditions.
For some machines maximum exhaust gas temperature can occur at part load. In
such a case obtain the exhaust gas temperature for this condition. In case of multi fuel
firing , obtain the exhaust gas parameters for single/ mixed fuel firing modes as
applicable.

2.2 Select the maximum gas turbine exhaust gas flow obtained from sl.no.2.1 above as
the design gas flow of the damper.

2.3 Select the design pressure based on maximum gas turbine exhaust pressure
obtained from gas turbine supplier.

2.4 Select the design gas temperature of the damper with 50 C margin over the
maximum exhaust gas temperature.

2.5 Select the maximum allowable pressure drop across damper under open conditions
(open towards Heat Recovery Steam generator (HRSG)).

2.6 Sealing efficiency with seal air system should be 100% and is achieved by 2 x 100%
seal air fans (1 working + 1 stand-by).

2.7 Select the type of actuator for the damper. Hydraulic or electric is acceptable for
combined cycle power plant and co-generation plant applications. However for co-
generation plants with fresh air firing system the same shall be based on requirements
in sl.no.2.8 below.

2.8 Select the opening and closing times for the damper based on the system
requirements . Same shall be imposed either from process steam side or HRSG side.

2.9 For positive isolation of exhaust duct during HRSG maintenance provide a motor
actuated guillotine damper at the diverter outlet.
