The sluice gate provides a convenient means of flow regulation, especially in irrigation and
drainage schemes where flow has to be distributed in networks of interconnected channels. The gate is
provided with a lifting mechanism so that the aperture beneath it may be set to any desired position. When
closed, the aperture is sealed so that no flow can pass through the gate. In this experiment we measure the
discharge under the gate and establish the effective coefficient of discharge. Sluice gate is used for flow
control and discharge measurement. A sluice gate is an opening in a hydraulic structure used for controlling
the discharge. Downstream free flow occurs at a (relatively) large ratio of upstream depth to the gate-
opening height. However, submerged flow at the downstream would occur for low values of this ration. For
freely stream from a sluice gate, the water surface is quite smooth whereas for a submerged flow, the
corresponding flow profile is extremely rough. The discharge coefficient of sluice gates in free and
submerged conditions plays an important role in determining the flow rate past such structures. The
effects of relative gate opening and submergence ratio have been widely considered by several
investigators, mainly based on experimental work
Sluice gate laboratory experiments give better understanding on how the dams and other structure
involving water works. The concept of sluice gate is very beneficial to engineers who specialized on water
resources. Sluice gate experiment study the application of one dimensional flow analysis involving
continuity, energy and momentum equation to a sluice gate in a rectangular channel Flow under a Sluice
Gate. Based on the result of the experiment, the coefficient of discharge is greatly dependent on the
velocity of the water flow. When the velocity increases, the coefficient of discharge also increases even in
the height of the opening in the gate is constant.
