Design Procedures for Columns

1. Assume the value of steel ratio between 1% to 6% of the gross concrete area,
Ag, the ideal value is from 0.015Ag to 0.03Ag to be equated to the area of
steel,Ast.
2. The load Pu is determined from the reactions from roof to second floor.
3. Solve for the gross concrete area, Ag
Pu=ϕ.80 ( 0.85 f ' c ( Ag− Ast ) + fyAst )
Ag=b 2
4. Solve for the number of rebar by dividing the area of steel to the gross area of
concrete.
5. The maximum spacing of ties is determined by taking the least value from the
following formula:
a.) 16 multiplied by longitudinal bar diameter
b.) 48 multiplied by tie diameters.
c.) Least dimension of column.
