1.4.2 Wind Load

qz = 0.613 Kz Kzt Kd V2 ASCE 7-10
Where:
qz = Velocity pressure evaluated at height z as defined in Section 29.3.2
Kz = Velocity pressure exposure coefficient defined in Section 29.3.1 Table 23.3-1
Exposure C
= 0.85 (0 - 4.60) meters high
= 0.94 Upto 7.60 meters high
= 0.98 Upto 9.10 meters high
= 1.04 Upto 12.20 meters high
Kzt = 1.00 - Topographic factor defined in Section 26.8.2 Table 26.6-1
Kd = 0.95 - Wind directional factor defined in Section 26.6
V = Wind velocity = 155 Km/hour (43 M/sec) By Client

1.5 SOIL BEARING CAPACITY

The Net Allowable Soil Bearing Capacity (SBC) as per KAABI Geotechnical Soil
Investigation Report is equal 60 KN/M2 Soil Report

B. CHECK FOUNDATION DIMENSION

DATA: (Povided by Client)

Diameter of Tank, D = 3.00 M
Tank Height, H = 9.00 M
Weight of NEW Tank Full (85 tons) (WF)= 850.00 KN

Existing Footing Size: Width, B = 3.10 M

Length, L = 3.10 M
Thickness, T = 0.60 M

Actual Area, AF = B x L = 9.61 M2

Weight of Footing, W = B x L x T x 24 = 138.40 KN

Calculate Required Area of Footing

A(Approx.) = WF x 1.10 / SBC = 850*1.10/60 = 15.58 m2 < 9.61 m2 Unsafe

Calculate Wind Load:

LOAD DIAGRAM

Wind Load:
qz = 0.613 Kz Kzt Kd V2
F = qz G Cf Af
Where:
F = Design wind pressure
G = 0.85 - Gust effect factor from Section 26.9
Cf = Force coefficient from Fig. 29.5-1
Af = Projected area normal to wind

Therefore, qz= 0.613 x 1.04 x 1.00 x 0.95 x 432 / 1000 = 1.12 KN/M2

H / D = 4.06
D√qz = 103.92
Cf = 0.90 Figure 29.5-1

Af = 11.58*2.85 = 33 M2

Fx = 1.12 x 0.85 x 0.90 x 11.58*2.85 = 28.28 KN

Check Footing Stability:

Factor of Safety Against Overturning (F.S.O.)

Tank is critical when empty

Righting Moment (R.M)

F.S.O. = ≥ 1.50
Overturning Moment ( O.M)

Calculate Righting Moment, (R.M.): Take Σ of Moment at point A

= WE x L / 2 = 102*3.10/2= 158.00 KN-M
= W x L / 2 = 138.40*3.10/2= 214.52 KN-M
Total R.M. = 372.62 KN-M

Calculate Overturning Moment, (O.M.):

O.M. = Fx (H / 2 + T) = 28.28*6.39 = 180.71 KN-M

F.S.O. = R.M. / O.M. = 2.01 > 1.50 Safe

E. Check Actual Soil Pressure

E.1 Case (1) : Tank Empty

Calculate Eccentricity, e

R.M. - O.M.
X= = 1.21 m
ΣP

L
e= -X = 0.34 m
2
e < L / 6, Therefore the Resultant Force is within the middle third

p(max.)/p(min.) = (ΣP / AF) ± Mc / I

Where:
AF = Area of Footing = L x B = 9.61 M2
M = O.M. = 118.00 KN-M
c = L / 2 = 1.55 M
I = B x L3 / 12 = 7.70 M4

p(max.) = 60.00 KN/M2 = S.B.C. = 60 KN/M2 Safe

E.2 Case (2) : Tank Full
Calculate Eccentricity, e

R.M. = WF x L / 2 = 1317.50 KN-M

W x L / 2 = 214.52 KN-M
Total R.M. = 1532.20 KN-M

R.M. - O.M.
X= = 1.43 m
ΣP

L
e= - X = 0.12 m
2
e < L / 6, Therefore the Resultant Force is within the middle third

p(max.)/p(min.) = ΣP / AF ± Mc / I
Where:
AF = Area of Footing = L x B = 9.61 M2
M = O.M. = 118.00 KN-M
c = L / 2 = 1.55 M
I = B x L3 / 12 = 7.70 M4

p(max.) = 118.17 KN/M2 > S.B.C. = 60 KN/M2 Unsafe

p(max.) is greater than the allowable and even, as per code: If the Vertical Load is
combined with Wind Load, the Allowable Soil Bearing Capacity could be increased by
33 %, Therefore 60 x 1.33 = 79.80 KN/M2 < p(max.). Unsafe

F. 1. Summary Report

No. Test Result

1 CHECK FOUNDATION DIMENSION Unsafe
2 Check Footing Stability: Safe
3 Check Actual Soil Pressure Unsafe

2. Conclusion
1. The existing tank foundation is not capable of carrying extra loads due
to Unsafe soil pressure that could lead to differtial settlement and structure failure.

2.To accept extra load , Soil bearing capacity must be improved by replacing the poor soil with
A-1-a Material and apply compaction Test or increase foundation dimensions .
