Monthly Exams – GME 08 Batch

Subject: EKG - Marine Boiler - Part 1 (Questions)

Attempt All questions. Marks for each question are indicated in
bracket at the end of the question. Max Marks =45, Pass Marks 25
Q1: Marine Combustion boilers are designed to use the chemical energy in fuel to
raise the heat energy content of water so that it can be used for heating and
power (prime movers) applications. (4)
Q2: Boilers are commonly subdivided into water tube or fire tube units. These
designations reflect the way the water and combustion gases are designed to
pass through the unit. (2)
Q3: water tube boilers are designed to circulate hot combustion gases around the
outside of a large number of water filled tubes. (2)
Q4: In cochran boilers the flue gases coming out of fire tubes pass through the
smoke box and are exhausted to the atmosphere through the chimney. (1)
Q5: Name any Four flue tube boiler mountings (4)
(i) pressure gauge (ii) Water gauge
(iii) Safety valve (iv) Steam stop valve
Q6: Corrugated shape of furnace gives greater strength (This is because additional
material in same length of furnace) and flexibility (2)
Q7: Stays are Solid bars for supporting steam spaces (1)
Q8: The smoke tubes may be plain or threaded to act as stays There is one stay
tube for every three plain tubes approx. (4)

Q9: For Boiler water tubes mild steel is generally used. (1)
Q10: For Super heater tubes operating above 455 oC a Chrome Molybdenum
alloyed steel is required
(1)
Q11: Dual pressure type boilers, the main reason for the adoption of this design of
boilers is to allow use of modern high efficiency water tube boilers without fear
of damage through contamination by cargo or fuel oils. (1)
Q12: One of disadvantage of water tube boiler is lower reserve of water means a
more efficient water level control is required and little allowance to corrosion.
(2)

Q13: One of advantage of water tube boiler is possibility of using higher

temperatures and pressures without unduly increasing wall thicknesses
increases plant efficiency
(2)
Q14: Name Any FIVE parts indicated by Arrows (5)

Generating bank
Steam drum

Insulation

Burner
Water drum

Q15: Boiler Blowdown is removal of water from the

boiler. It is done in order to remove the amount of solids
in the water, and is performed as either bottom
(sludge) blowdown, or continuous (surface) blowdown (3)
Q16: Objectives of the Boiler Water Testing is to Monitor the condition of the boiler
water. (1)
Q17: The Alkalinity Test is carried out in two stages:
i) )Phenolphthalein Alkalinity Test ii) M-Alkalinity (2)
Q18: Purpose of M-Alkalinity test warns us against possible formation of Carbonic
acid inside the boiler. (2)
Q19: Purpose of Chloride ppm CI test : (i) Gives warning against any Sea water
contamination of the Boiler Feed System.(ii) Help to establish an effective
blowdown control of the boiler. (3)
Q20: Purpose of Excess phosphate test. It helps to maintain a phosphate reserve in
the boiler to counter any possible contamination of the boiler water by
corrossive and Scale forming salts. (2)
