General Process Description
PROCESS DESCRIPTION
A.-ABOUT MBBR TECHNOLOGY:
Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor MBBR process is a state-of-the-art fixed-film {or attached growth)
biological process used for wastewater treatment both municipally and industrially for BOD/COD
removal, nitrification and de-nitrification.

Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor {MBBR) processes improve reliability, simplify operation, and require
less space than traditional wastewater treatment systems. MBBR technology employs thousands of
polyethylene biofilm carriers operating in mixed motion within an aerated wastewater treatment
basin. Each individual bio carrier increases productivity through providing protected surface area to
support the growth of heterotrophic and autotrophic bacteria within its cells. It is this high-density
population of bacteria that achieves high-rate biodegradation within the system, while also offering
process reliability and ease of operation.

This technology provides cost-effective treatment with minimal maintenance since MBBR processes
self-maintain an optimum level of productive biofilm. Additionally, the biofilm attached to the
mobile bio carriers within the system automatically responds to load fluctuations.

BEFORE USE AFTER USE

MBBR technology has become the preferred biological treatment technology because it offers
several advantages over the traditional Activated Sludge Process, the most popular technology. The
MBBR reactor shaves off 60-85% BOD and reduces the load to downstream activated sludge process
significantly resulting in a very efficient treatment with a lower footprint.
Key features of MBBR Process:

1. Compact: It requires a small footprint. Typically, it requires 1/3rd the space required for
Activated Sludge Process.
2. Efficient: It generates low solids and requires no or minimum polymer for solid/liquid
separation
3. Robust: It is stable under load variations, insensitive to temporary limitation and provides
consistent treatment results
4. Cost: It requires a low capital cost and is comparable to cost of Activated Sludge Process. It is
cheaper than the MBR {membrane based) process.
5. Flexible: Existing plants can be upgraded easily with MBBR. New MBBR plants can be
upgraded to handle higher loads with no or minimum cost and construction.
6. Trouble Free: It is easy to operate, has automatic sludge wasting, has no sludge Return and no
MLSS, and there no issue of media clogging.

KEY LAMELLA CLARIFIER SYSTEM ADVANTAGE

1. Lamella Clarifier System Units are Extremely compact and simple biological treatment
system.
2. Simple process solution which allows reduction of the bioreactor volume in newly built as
well as retrofitted WWTPs
3. The process is not susceptible to loss of treatment efficiency at high hydraulic loading periods
due to retention of biomass immobilized on suspended particles.
4. Flexible Design that allows for increased capacity.
5. No operational adjustments, only equipment maintenance.
6. Stable under large load variations.
7. Small footprint – When compared to other solids separation technologies (e.g. Conventional
clarifiers)
8. Highly efficient solids separation
9. Low operational costs - Efficient design allowing for low chemicals usages and low energy
requirements
10. Maximum longevity – Lamella concentration construction materials ensure maximum
durability of the Lamella clarifier even under the hardest environments (e.g. pH, salinity,
corrosion)
B. SYSTEM PROCESS DESCRIPTION:
1. MBBR Technology Based Aeration Tank
The MBBR process can be categorized as Aerobic attached growth process. A reduction in the
aeration tank volume because it uses a support or carrier that gives a high specific surface.
The biodegradation reactor comes in one or two stages depending on required BOD removal
efficiency. Plants with higher BOD removal efficiency than 80-85 % need a two-stage system.
The bioreactors are degrading the dissolved organic matter by oxidation into carbon dioxide,
which escapes to the air, and to biomass that acts as activated sludge. A suspended, free
floating biofilm carrier medium is providing a large, protected biofilm surface for the bacteria
and is simultaneously accumulating the active bio-sludge inside the reactors. It does not
require reactor biomass recirculation - This gives rise to the fact that the biomass does not
depend on the final separation of the sludge and as a consequence typical problem found in
conventional activated sludge processes related to the sedimentation properties of the
sludge (filamentous bulking, etc.). The operation and control are simple for this type of
processes. Aeration is provided by set of air blowers, lateral pipe works & perforated pipes.

Nitrification (aeration) & De-nitrification (anoxic) along with Phosphorus (coagulant dosing)
removal system will be provided based inlet values of TKN, TN, N02-N03, TP or based client
request.
2. Tube settler
A Tube settler is provided for settlement of fully aerated Industrial wastewater from the
MBBR Unit. Part of the settled sludge at the bottom of the settling tank will be pumped to
the MBBR unit and part of it will be discharged on sludge holding tank as per operational
requirement. The lamella clarifier is provided with Tube Settler media.

The Tube Settler Clarifier is ideally suited for municipal potable water or Industrial
wastewater treatment plants, as well as industrial applications. Similar to parallel plate
modules, the tubes provide a series of inclined surfaces for suspended particles to rapidly
collect and settle upon while the clarified effluent flows out of the tank and on to the next
stage of the treatment process. When the collected particles become heavy enough, they fall
from the tube modules and descend to the bottom of the clarifier. Tube Settler modules are
typically between 0.75 m. and 1 m. in vertical height. The tubes are somewhat hexagonal in
shape with each tube having up to a cross sectional area of 25 cm2. This design allows
particles to settle more rapidly by achieving laminar flow and decreasing the distance a
particle needs to travel before it is considered a settled particle. Instead of traveling several
feet to the bottom of the tank, it now must only travel a few inches or less. This rapid settling
effect maximizes the effective surface area for settling, thereby minimizing clarifier footprint.
An increase in water treatment plant flow rate is also enabled by tube settlers. The settling
tank is designed with 45-60° hopper bottom to allow sludge accumulation for easy removal.
4. ELECTRICAL & CONTROL SYSTEM:
MBBR system is provided with Main control panel in FRP construction, located in skid based on
system type. Control system is selection either Relay logic or PLC based on
complexity of control sequences or client request. Protection class
considered with IP 54. HMI can be provided upon client request.
