A Seminar On

Electromagnetic Clutch System

By

Mr. Shubham Dattatra Ladkat

Prof. V. D. Sapkale

Department Of Mechanical Engineering

KJEI’S Trinity Academy of Engineering Pune

z
Introduction

 Warner Electric designed the first electromagnetic clutch.

 Electromagnetic clutches operate electrically but transmit torgue

mechanically.

 That’s the reason we also called electromechanical clutches.

z
E. M. Specifications

 Engagement & disengagement is electrically operated.

 No linkages are required to control it’s engagement

 Easy to handle

 High torque to size ratio.

 Response is fast.
z
Principle Of E. M. Clutch

 E. M. Clutch is simply based on electro-magnetism.

 Magnetic fields are produced due to circulation

 Of electric current in conducting coils.

 Direction of magnetic field can be obtain.

by “right hand rule”
z
Working of E. M. Clutch

 Working conditions..

1. D.c source

2. Voltage supply should be same as clutch rating.

3. Constant /non fluctuating power supply.

4. Maintains almost constant operating temperature.

z
Engagement Time

 There are two engagement time to consider.

1. Time take for coil to develop the magnetic field to pull armature
.

 No. Of turns on coil

 Air gap between armature and roroto

2 .Response time of clutch(time to speed).

z
Advantages Of E. M. Clutch

 Complicated linkage is not required.

 Wear & tear s almost eliminated.

 Requires less current with no load condition.

 It can work on 24 V D. C. with low wattage.

z
Disadvantages of E. M. Clutch

 Risk of overheating during engagement.

 High initial cost.

 If the current falls, torque will also decreases.

z
Application of E. M. Clutch

 Machinery.

e. g. Printing machinery, conveyors, lawnmowers etc.

 Automobiles

e. g. Outdoor use, in some Renaults cars.

 Locomotive.

e. g Diesel locomotives.
