Section I : Answer all questions.
Section II : Answer all questions.
SECTION I
1. (5x2M=10M)

a Compare open and closed systems. 2M

b Formulate Boyle’s law from its statement. 2M
c Define PPM-II. 2M
d Compute the specific enthalpy and entropy of steam at 9 bar and 0.6 dry. 2M
e A diesel engine operating on diesel cycle has cut off ratio 2.2, compression ratio 15.3 estimate 2M
it’s efficiency.
SECTION II (4x15M=60M)
a Gas from a cylinder of compressed helium is used to inflate an inelastic flexible balloon,
originally folded completely flat, to a volume 0.6 m3. If the barometer reads 760mm Hg, what is
6M
2 the amount of work done upon the atmosphere by the balloon? Sketch the system before and
after the process.
b Prove that Pv γ =C represents the adiabatic processes. Also derive the equation for its work done. 9M
(OR)
a The properties of a closed system change following the relation between pressure and volume as
pV = 3.0 where p is in bar V is in m3. Calculate the work done when the pressure increases from 8M
3
1.5 bar to 7.5 bar.
b Prove that the work is a path function. 7M

A new scale N of temperature is divided in such a way that the freezing point of ice is 300°N and the
boiling point is 600°N. What is the temperature reading on this new scale when the temperature is
4 15M
100°C? At what temperature both the Celsius and the new temperature scale reading would be the
same?
(OR)
5 The clasius and kelvin plans statements are same. Justify the statement. 15M

a Demonstrate the Van der Waals Equation to find the constants ‘a and b’ in terms of critical
7M
properties.
6
b Steam enters an engine at 10 bar and 400⁰C and exhausted at 0.2 bar with 0.9 dry. Determine the
8M
change in enthalpy and entropy.
(OR)
A vessel is divided into three compartments (a), (b), and (c) by two partitions. Part (a) contains
oxygen and has a volume of 0.1 m3 , (b) has a volume of 0.2 m3 and contains nitrogen, while (c) is
0.05 m3 and holds CO2 . All three parts are at a pressure of 2 bar and a temperature of 13°C. When
7 15M
the partitions are removed and the gases mix, determine the change of entropy of each constituent,
the final pressure in the vessel and the partial pressure of each gas. The vessel may be taken as being
completely isolated from its surroundings.

8 a The minimum pressure and temperature in an Otto cycle are 100 kPa and 27°C. The amount of 9M

heat added to the air per cycle is 1500 kJ/kg. (i) Determine the pressures and temperatures at all
points of the air standard Otto cycle.(ii) Also calculate the specific work and thermal efficiency
of the cycle for a compression ratio of 8 : 1.Take for air : cv = 0.72 kJ/kg K, and Υ= 1.4.
b Compare the Otto, Diesel and Dual cycle for the same compression ratio and heat rejection with
6M
PV diagram.
(OR)
Two engines are to operate on Otto and Diesel cycles with the following data: Maximum
temperature 1400 K, exhaust temperature 700 K. State of air at the beginning of compression 0.1
9 15M
MPa, 300 K. Estimate the compression ratios, the maximum pressures, efficiencies, and rate of work
outputs (for 1 kg/min of air) of the respective cycles.
