1. Definition of terms: (some terms are being revised)

a. Define ‘language’ and support your definition with example/examples. Please cite your
source if you are referring to one.

Language is a system of communication which consists of a set of sounds and


written symbols used for talking and writing by the people of a particular country or region
(Collins Online Dictionary, 2020). As an example, Malaysiasn who lives in Malaysia
communicate with each other in Malay language. This because Malay is Malaysia’s national
language.

b. Define ‘vernacular language’ and support your definition with example/examples. Please cite
your source if you are referring to one.

 List the type of vernacular schools that are available in your country.

c. Define ‘minority language’ ~ and support your definition with example/examples. Please cite
your source if you are referring to one.

Minority language is a language spoken by a minority of the population of a territory.


This language is the language used by the minority group in a particular region. Not many
people can master minority language because less exposure on a particular minority language
and also this language has slowy lost in the passage of time. Example of minority languages
are Melanau Language, Iban Language and etc.

d. Define ‘technology’ and support your definition with example/examples. Please cite your
source if you are referring to one.

Technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes,


especially in industry. For example, the invention of human-like robots that can make
humans’ lives easier.

e. In your own words, do you think that ‘vernacular language’ is the same as ‘minority
language’? Justify your opinion.

No. Vernacular and minority languages can be classified as the mother tongue of the
people in a particular region. However, these two are not the same because although
vernacular is a dialect but it has a large number of speakers compared to minority language.
In a region, a language that is least used is called the minority language. As an example, in
Mukah, Sarawak, the minority language is Malay because most of the residents there are
Melanau., so the preferred language of communication is Melanau not Malay.
