Barangay Profile

The project has consist of three (3) road alignments were considered as proposed

bypass roads while determining the feasibility of the proposed farm to market road. The

alignments were compared to the existing roaod from Sto. Tomas Poblacion – Magwawa –

Panaga Road. The first the alignment is composed of 4 barangays of santo. tomas the tibal-

og ,San Jose, New Visayas and Magwawa.

Santo Tomas is a landlocked municipality in the coastal province of Davao del Norte.

The municipality has a land area of 221.80 square kilometers or 85.64 square miles which

constitutes 6.47% of Davao del Norte's total area. Its population as determined by the 2015

Census was 118,750. This represented 11.68% of the total population of Davao del Norte

province, or 2.43% of the overall population of the Davao Region. Based on these figures, the

population density is computed at 535 inhabitants per square kilometer or 1,387 inhabitants per

square mile (philatlas.com).

Municipality of Santo Tomas has 19 barangays. Barangay Tibal-og (Pob.) had the

biggest population of 41,354 persons in 2015 and accounted for about 34.94% of the

municipality’s population. It was followed by Barangay Kimamon with 7,411, and the Barangay

Bobongon with 6,551 persons. Meanwhile, Barangay Magwawa was the smallest barangay in

2015, in terms of population size, with 1,610 persons (see Table 1).

Figure 1 shows the average household size (AHS) in Municipality of Santo Tomas. AHS
in 2015 is the same as the recorded AHS in 2010 at 4.5 persons. In 2000, there were 4.99
persons, on average, per household.

Figure 2 shows the population by age group of Sto. Tomas for 2015. Combining age
groups together, those aged 14 and below, which consists of the young dependent population
which include infants/babies, children and young adolescents/teenagers, make up an aggregate
of 32.31% (38,371). Those aged 15 up to 64, roughly, the economically active population and
actual or potential members of the work force, constitute a total of 63.81% (75,775). Finally, old
dependent population consisting of the senior citizens, those aged 65 and over, total 3.88%
(4,604) in all.

Additionally, among the population of Santo Tomas, there are 51 youth dependents to
every 100 of the working age population; there are 6 aged/senior citizens to every 100 of the
working population; and overall, there are 57 dependents (young and old-age) to every 100 of
the working population. It has also a median age of 24 which indicates that half of the entire
population of Santo Tomas are aged less than 24 and the other half are over the age of 24.

Barangay San Jose

Based on the census conducted by PSA (2015), the barangay San Jose has the

population of 3,371 which represented 2.84% of the total population of Santo Tomas.

Meanwhile the age group with the highest population in San Jose is 5 to 9, with 423 individuals.

Conversely, the age group with the lowest population is 75 to 79, with 18 individuals. The

population of San Jose grew from 1,512 in 1990 to 3,371 in 2015, an increase of 1,864 people.

The latest census figures in 2015 denote a positive growth rate of 4.90%, or an increase of 750

people, from the previous population of 2,626 in 2010.

Barangay New Visayas

On the other hand, the barangay New Visayas representing 2.29 % of Santo Tomas

'total population, which also grew from 1,329 in 1990 to 2,716 in 2015, an increase of 1,387
people. A positive growth rate of 0.51 % from the previous population of 2.645 in 2010, or an

increase of 71 people .The age group with the highest New Visayas population is 5 to 9, with

332 people. By comparison, the age group with the lowest population is 80 years and over, with

11 people.

Baseline pre-test survey was conducted on February 2020 of a sample size of 21

household of the alignment 1 that consist of four barangays named Tibal-og, New Visayas, San

Jose and Magwawa to determine the basic information of the household. According to the figure

3 below most the respondent surveyed was ages 41 years old in above with the mean age of

40.55.

In Gender, the majority of the household per barangay was male and based on the total

population, as shown in Figure 4 below, male dominated with a percentage of 76 percent over a

24% female.

The baseline survey provided an overview of household characteristics in alignment 1

(Table 1). The average household size in alignment 1 is roughly 4.76, and household heads are

mostly male with an average age of 40.55 and mostly married (76 %). Majority of religion is

Roman Catholic and only 19.05 percentage is IP members. The average household resides in

18 years and only 9.52 percent is displaced household.

Most household is not currently attending school with the highest education of elementary

graduate (30.77 %).The survey data indicated that only 9.52 percent household experience

illness and 38.1 percnet is practicing delay in pregnancy using pills.

Most workers at alignment 1 are skilled workers with an average income level of up to

7,143.4. In comparison, 19.05 percent are unemployed because they are retired employees.
Self-employed households have an average daily income of 152.5 pesos which contributes to

their revenue source.

For agricultural aspects the household owns a total of 1.005 hectares. Just 5 per cent of

households grow rice and 10 percent are engage in corn and coconut farming. Households

commit just 10 percent to livestock, mainly hog, poultry and fishing.

The single household structure is made of light materials with water-sealed toilet (61 per cent)

with most electricity access.

It also shows that households consume 2 kg of rice a day, 1.4 kg of meat and 2

kg of fish a week. In clothing, they only invested a total of 1,216 pesos a year.

Household also saved an average amount of 2,722 for medical care while paying for an

electricity bill of about 793.8 pesos per month. In addition, they also allocated an

amount of 62.07 pesos for their transport. Some households tend to be slightly indebted

(23.81 percent) to spend on a significant matter with an average loan amount of 18,800

pesos (23.81 percent).

Alignment 2 is consists of 3 barangay in sto.tomas, the barangay tibal-og, new visayas

and magwawa and it has the length of 25,795 kilometers.

The baseline pretest survey has been conducted with a sample size of 16 households.

Based on figure 5, it reveals that most households are ages in the range of 25-28 and 41 above

with a mean age of 39.6.

In gender, alignment 2 also dominates with male over female. The alignment 2 has the

number of 11 males and only 5 females of the total household surveyed as shown in Figure 6.

The Socio Demographic profile of alignment 2 was presented in Table 3 below. The

average household size in alignment 2 is 4.31 and the household heads are mostly married

male with an average age of 39.6.The majority of the household is Roman Catholic and there

are 25% members of IP. The average household residency is 17 years, and only 13 per is

displaced household.

Only 19 percent of the household attending in public school. College Graduate (12.50 %)

is the highest education earned by the household. Survey data showed, that alignment 2 are

dominated by males, so pregnancy cases have no record and only 13 percent of the total
household experience illness in 3 barangays that composed in alignment 2 and 57.14 percent

families are practicing family planning through the use of pills.

Most workers have an average income of 6,583.25 pesos. In contrast, 19 percent are

engaged in farming, which means that they are not looking for a job. Self-employed households

have an average daily income of 152.5 pesos which contributes to their source of income.

The household owns a total of 1.7 ha in agriculture. Only 6 per cent of households grow

rice and 13 per cent grow corn and coconut. Fewer households engage to livestock (6%),

specifically the hog, poultry and fish.

Most of the Household’s houses are made of light materials with an access to electricity.

Moreover, 75 percent uses water-sealed toilet design and even use wood for cooking (81.25 %).

It also says that households are consuming 2 kg of rice a day, 1.4 kg of meat and 2 kg of

fish a week. They have spent a total of 1,216.15 pesos a year in clothes. Household also saved

an average amount of 1,842.33 for medical care while paying only 744.18 pesos a month for an

electricity bill.

Household allotted 62.07 pesos for their transportation, and 73.13 pesos for children’s

allowance. Moreover, some households (25 %) appeared to have credit loan with an average

amount of 6,000 pesos that use for a needed expenses.

The Sealand Engineering Consultancy is a group of environmental planners with a team

of multidisciplinary backgrounds. Currently, the company is commissioned to conduct a

feasibility study for Technical, Economic, Environmental and Social Assessment Studies in

Developing Optimal Investment Program in Affected Barangay under Brgy. Magwawa –

Barangay Panaga Road Project in Sto. Tomas, Davao Del Norte. The project will cover certain

barangays including the barangay bobongon which has a proposed bypass road of 25.961 kms.

Bobongon is a barangay in the province of Davao del Norte, in the municipality of Santo

Tomas with a Land Area of 2,900 Hectares. It is situated at approximately 7.5018, 125.5499, in

the island of Mindanao. Elevation at these coordinates is estimated at 101.0 meters or 331.4

feet above mean sea level.

The population as calculated by the 2015 Census was 6,551. It represented 5.52% of

the total population of Santo Tomas.

The distance from Barangay to the town will be about 7 kilometers. Figure 02 illustrate

the boundaries for the east is located at Barangay La Libertad, Sto. Tomas Davao Del norte, for

west is in Paquibato District, Davao City while for the north is in Barangay New Visayas, Sto.

Tomas Davao Del norte and lastly, for the south is in the Balagunan Sto. Tomas Davao Del

norte.
The age group with the highest population in Bobongon, with 712 men, is 5 to 9

according to the 2015 Census. Conversely, with 34 people the age group with the lowest

population is 80 and over.

Base on the 2015 census of the PSA, Bobongon's population increased from 3,547 in

1990 to 6,551 in 2015, an increase of 3,004 individuals. The new 2015 census estimates show

a positive growth rate of 1.35 percent from the previous population of 6.105 in 2010, or a rise of

446 people.

Most of the residence of the barangay Bobongon is a worker of the Banana Company as

their main source of income.

The alignment 3 gender was dominated by male with the percentage of 64 % over

36.36% female in an overall sample size of 11 households as shown in table 4 above.

Table 5 presented above is the summary statistics for socioeconomic characteristics of

the respondents in alignment 3. It was found that the majority of the household respondents are

married male with an average age of 46 years old. The household has a total of five members,

the majority is Roman Catholic and has a 22 year residency. Just 27 per cent have been

registered by the displaced household.

About 27.27% of the households has finished Elementary in the public school. Same as

in alignment 1 and 2, it has no record of pregnant women because 45.45 percent of the family is

practicing family planning in natural control using calendar and withdrawal method ( 60 %) and

only 27.27 experienced illness in the area.

Average household income will range into 6,776 per month and half of the total

household respondents engaged in farming. In addition, an average of 125 pesos per day has

been earned by the small business entrepreneur (sari- sari store).

From Table 5, it can be seen that the mean score for farm land holding sizes per

household was found to be 1.25 hectares which is same with the 2 alignments. Rice, maize and

coconut production is just 18 percent, as well as in hog-raising and a small percentage in duck-

raising

(9 %).

Most of the household home is single house with a strong wall and roof materials (45 %)

compared to the alignment 1 and 2 that uses only light materials.

It is also shows that alignment 3 consume more food than the two alignment.

Households are consuming 2.5 kg of rice a day, 2.5 kg of meat and 2 kg of fish a week. They

spent 1,366 pesos a year in clothes. Household also saved an average of 1,905 for medical

treatment while paying for an energy bill a month at 1,598 pesos which is to high compared to

the two alignment.
