Individual Assignment
1. A plate of your element is a window in a heat exchanger. The fluid flowing along the hot side
of the heat exchanger is at a temperature of 0.75 x the melting point (K) of your element. The
coolant fluid flowing along the cold side of the heat exchanger is at 300 K. The heat transfer
coefficients are h IN = 100 W/m 2 -K and h OUT = 50 W/m 2 -K. The window is 800 x 800 mm
in cross section and 200 mm thick. The metallic window is inserted in a refractory-ceramic wall
that is an excellent insulator.
For steady state operation of the heat exchanger compute and plot:
1. The temperature as a function of distance in the thickness direction.
2. The heat flux as a function of distance in the thickness direction.
3. The heat flow rate as a function of the distance in the thickness direction.
Thermal resistance, R, is connected with the thermal conductivity, λ, and the fabric thickness, h,
