Objectives:

• To prepare a standard solution of 1.0 M sodium hydroxide and diluting the solution to
0.2 M.

• To dilute 1.0 M of sulphuric acid stock solution to the final concentration of 0.1 M.

Apparatus:

Volumetric flasks (50 mL and 100 mL)

Volumetric pipette (5 mL and 10 mL)

Beaker (100 mL)
Filter Funnel
Glass rod
Dropper
Pipette filler or suction bulb

Chemical

Sodium hydroxide,NaOH

1.0 M sulphuric acid, H 2SO 4

Distilled water

Procedure

A.Preparation of 1.0 M NaOH

1. 4.0 g NaOH been weighed accurately
2. 100 mL beaker been added wih NaOH and added the solution with 50 mL of distilled
water.
3. Used a glass rod to stirred the solution until all NaOH dissolved.
4. Transfer the solution into 100 mL volumetric flask by used the filter funnel.Volumetric
been added with distilled water until it reached calibration mark.(dropper been used to add a
few last drops of distilled water).
5.For the solution to be homogeneous, shaked the volumetric flask by turning it upside-down
for a few times.

B.Dilution of NaOH solution

1.The solution of 1.0 M that is the product that has been gained from PROCEDURE A was
pipetted using the volumetric pipette.
2.Measured solution was transferred into a 50 mL volumetric flask and then the distilled
water was added until it reached calibration mark of the flask. For the last few drops of
distilled water make sure used the dropper.
3.In order for the solution to be homogeneous the volumetric flask was shaked by turning it
upside-down a few times.

C.Dilution of H 2 S O 4 solution
1.With the used of 5 mL volumetric pipette,1.0 M H 2SO4 was been measured accurately.
2. Transferred the measured solution into a 50 mL volumetric flask and added distilled water
until it reached calibration mark. For the last few drops used the dropper.
3.The solution been homogenous by been shaked a few time by turning volumetric flask
upside-down.

Question
1.Determine the volume of solution needed to prepare the following diluted solution from a
concentrated solution.
a.Preparation of 250 mL of 5 M HCI from 10 M HCI.
Answer

V=125 mL

b.Preparation of 300 mL of 2.5 M KOH from 15 M KOH.

Answer

15 V 1=750
V=50 mL

2.Determine the molarity of the

a.solution made by diluting a 0.125 M solution of HCI from 25 mL to the final volume of 250
mL.
Answer

Discussion
From this experiment,I successfully obtained the result that we expected.I managed to
measure the volume of the solution accurately and followed the steps carefully to gather the
result that we want.

Conclusion
In this experiment,a standard solution of 1.0 M sodium hydroxide successfully been prepared
and the process to dilute that solution have been archieved. 1.0 M of sulphuric acid stock
solution have been diluted to the final concentration of 0.1 M.
