FOUNDATION FOR COMMUNITY LITERACY ORGANISATION

INTRODUCTION

Literacy is a human right and the basis for lifelong learning. It empowers individuals,
families and communities and improves their quality of life. Because of its “multiplier
effect”, literacy helps eradicate poverty, reduce child mortality, curb population growth,
achieve gender equality and ensure sustainable development, peace and democracy.

In today’s rapidly-changing, knowledge based societies where social and political

participation takes place both physically and virtually, acquisition of basic literacy skills
and the advancement and application of such skills throughout life is crucial.

It is with this information that lead to the establishment of Foundation for Community
Literacy to help in empowering the community with literacy skills that would help in
developing the communities to be able to make reliable decision on day to day life
activities.

Foundation for Community Literacy Organization (FOCOLIO) was established in 2016 to

help the communities and its people with literacy programmes that would help in
changing their lives.

CORE VALUES:
KNOWLEDGE: Provide information to the community that would help them to
understand

their societies and learn how to develop themselves through

knowledge sharing and management.
EDUCATE:
Make the community aware on the issue surrounding them, ensure
that those who are unable to attain school should be able to know
other ways of making their life better by attaining literacy skills
through different platforms
Give skills to the vulnerable to make their informed decisions about
EMPOWER: their
future and how they can make a living out of the literacy skill they
have.
MISSION STATEMENT

To provide literacy programme relevant to community`s reading level, with the aim of
improving literacy and encouraging enthusiasm for reading and writing in youth, children
and adults.

VISION

To have learned and vibrant community that is able to read and write and contribute
positively to the development of their communities

Organization Objectives

1. To provide information materials to communities that would enhance reading

and writing among youth and children
2. To empower communities/wards with skills and training so that they contribute to
the literacy program in their communities

3. To Promote youth and children’s rights in the development and implementation of

policies and programs responding to increase literacy levels at community level

4. To promote and increase understanding of democratic process and human rights

through the provision of relevant information resources

5. To lobby for child rights promotion and protection in particular to right to

education

PROGRAMMES

FOCOLIO would want to contribute towards the attainment of Sustainable Development

Goal 4 target which state ensures inclusive and equitable quality education and promote
lifelong learning opportunities for all. To attain this goal number 4 the programmes shall
be implemented in the following key thematic areas:

4. INTER SCHOOLS READING PROGRAM

5. WOMEN AND GIRL CHILD EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMS

6. EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

7. BUILDING THE GREEN MALAWI

8. HYGIENE AND WATER SANITATION AWARENESS PROGRAM

Registration
The grouping is registered with Malawi Government under the Ministry of Gender,
Children and Community Development
