Stratum a layer or a series of layers of rock in the ground.

needle for injecting or withdrawing fluids.

Acetabulum the socket of the hipbone, into which the head of the
femur fits.

Larva the active immature form of an insect, especially one


that differs greatly from the adult and forms the stage
between egg and pupa.

Chorda A tendon or a strong band of fibres that connects


muscles to bones

Varix An enlarged and convoluted vein, artery, or


lymphatic vessel.

Fungus any of a group of spore-producing organisms feeding


on organic matter, including molds, yeast,
mushrooms, and toadstools.

Ganglion a structure containing a number of nerve cell bodies,


typically linked by synapses, and often forming a
swelling on a nerve fiber.

Villus any of the fingerlike or threadlike projections from


the surface of certain membranous structures,
typically serving to increase surface area and
facilitate the passage of fluid or nutrients.

Atrium each of the two upper cavities of the heart from


which blood is passed to the ventricles. The right
atrium receives deoxygenated blood from the veins
of the body; the left atrium receives oxygenated
blood from the pulmonary vein.

Pons part of the brainstem that links the medulla oblongata


and the thalamus.

Ovum a mature female reproductive cell, especially of a


human or other animal, which can divide to give rise
to an embryo usually only after fertilization by a
male cell.
